The John le Carre best-seling spy novel turned spy film, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy earned the seriously underrated Gary Oldman an Oscar nomination for his performance, one of which I regretfully haven't seen yet. Now former Best Actor award winner Philip Seymour Hoffman has his sights set on portraying another famous character from the works of the acclaimed writer. Coming Soon reports Hoffman has signed on to star in A Most Wanted Man, which will be helmed by The American director Anton Corbijin.
The actor who rocked our world with Capote, among other fine performances, will get the lead role of Gunther Bachmann, who's head of the German spy unit once negotiations are wrapped up with FilmNation Entertainment. The studio made these announcements earlier this week.
Here's what Producer Gail Egan had to say about the announcement,
"We are completely thrilled at the prospect of Philip Seymour Hoffman playing Bachmann in Andrew Bovell’s brilliant adaptation of this very modern thriller by John le Carré. We will start shooting in Hamburg in September and are delighted to be working with Anton Corbijn on this film. His unique vision for le Carré’s complex and stylish story is very contemporary, very real, very human."
Here's the brief IMDB synopsis of the film: A Chechian Muslim illegally immigrates to Hamburg, where he gets caught up in the international war on terror.
Unfortunately, I'm not much of a reader, thus I'm not familiar with Le Carre's novels, though I do love a good spy film. I've heard mixed reviews on Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy; however that won't halt Corbijn, Hoffman, Bovell and company from creating a stellar film with A Most Wanted Man. They're currently described as being in pre-production with an expected release date of sometime during 2013.
