10 Minute John Carter Clip Lowers My "This Movie Will Suck" Expectation

Disney has released a 10-minute clip for John Carter to wet the beaks of everyone who is super jazzed to see it come this Friday.  While I myself am not that jazzed to see it; this clip does help the cause that it will be better than the trailer suggests. If nothing else, I’ll just pretend its 1990 and that’s Tom Cruise running around as John Carter.  That’s not weird is it?

While the clip doesn’t offer a lot in the way of plot details and we’re only treated strictly to the western stuff, it does show, pretty effectively I think, what we might be in for.  The action seems somewhat solid and Bryan Cranston is featured in this clip.  And that can never be a bad thing.  Another reason to be a bit optimistically peckish about this movie: director Andrew Stanton.  The guy has a pretty solid track record with Pixar and if Brad Bird can make the transition to live action with great success, why not Andrew?

Considering how well the box office has been doing the past few weeks, it will be interesting to see how this movie does on opening weekend.  Can it hit the high that The Lorax did?  I would say no, but I think it could hit $40-50 million.  As for Disney, I’m betting they’re a little nervous about this movie, given its $250 million reported budget.    Good luck dudes.

Craig is referring to the fact that Tom Cruise was once attached to star in the John Carter film during the 90s.

There are some ironies when you think of what came later. Cruise played a Civil war soldier in "The Last Samurai". He was in the fantasy movie 'Legend". McTeirnan made sort of a fantasy movie with "The Thirteenth Warrior". My thing in thinking how 'John Carter of Mars' would have been done had it been made in the 80's or 90's is look at the adaptation of Burrough's Tarzan with "Greystoke: The Legend of Tarzan, Lord of the Apes" in '83, "Dune" in '84 and then the countless Star Wars ripoffs after '77. They couldn't - or wouldn't have made anything much better.
