Paul Verhoeven's RoboCop didn't have a sexy, star-studded cast by any means. Peter Weller still isn't much of a household name. The RoboCop reboot seems hell bent on not taking the same route by boasting a formidable cast around Murphy lead Joel Kinnaman. House star Hugh Laurie may soon add his name to the heavyweight list as the cyborg cop's chief adversary, according to Variety.
If Laurie enlists his services, he'll join recent signees Gary Oldman, Samuel L. Jackson and Abbie Cornish in providing recognizable talent for Jose Padiha's film. Laurie is an outstanding candidate for this role of the head Omni Corp villain, who builds his own android police force. His attitude seen as the wise-cracking doc displayed on House each week is perfect for the dark, slightly sarcastic backdrop showcased in the bleak futuristic Detroit landscape of RoboCop.
At first, I was peeved Oldman wasn't brought on board as a villain, but Laurie is so much better for this type of character. A salesman type antagonist with considerable sway, who can convince anyone to conduct evil deeds on his behalf. Bravo to MGM if they can put a bow on Laurie here.
RoboCop version 2.0 is set to hit theaters on August 9th, 2013. And while, a remake of this story wasn't in high demand, movie fans like myself sure do appreciate the effort.
