David Fincher Opts Out of 'Cleopatra'

David Fincher, well known director of such classics as Se7en, Fight Club, and The Social Network was at one point attached to a new version of Cleopatra starring Angelina Jolie.  It's an odd movie for a studio to put stock into, as the most well known adaption was for a 1930's project that's mostly known for being one of the biggest box office bombs of the time.  Although, that means we still talk about it, so maybe they're on to something.  Either way, Fincher has opted out of the project.

No official reason has been given, though one certainly isn't hard to find.  Fincher has also been attached to a remake of 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, the kind of big-budget project that would take a lot of time to make.  And, there's always the possibility that he'll direct The Girl Who Played With Fire, if that ever actually goes into production.

Supposedly, the next person in line to direct the flick is Ang Lee, whose new film The Life of Pi is due for a December release date.

Who would you guys want to see direct Angelina Jolie in this new historical epic?

Why can't we talk about it as a new movie adaptation of a historical figure rather than as a remake of something else. You DO know that Cleopatra was a REAL person and not just a movie made in the 60's, right? I can't tell sometimes if it's a case of where there ARE INDEED so many remakes, that some commentators think that's all the industry makes or the disdain for remakes is so extreme that the cynicism becomes a self perpetuating cycle. Just because they're making a movie of Cleopatra DOES NOT mean they're making the Liz Taylor version all over again.
