Wednesday, August 29, 2012 at 2:04PM Joss Whedon Goes Back to What He Knows with S.H.I.E.L.D. TV Series

I'm not actually a big fan of TV shows. Yet, I'm a total Joss Whedon fanboy. You can probably see my dilemma. I had hoped that this would have been fixed with The Avengers, as Whedon finally proved that he could critically and commercially succeed in the Hollywood film world. But, for better or for worse, Joss Whedon has decided to use his clout to go back to what he knows best, and he's using the Marvel universe to do it.
According to Deadline, ABC has ordered a pilot for a series focusing on the S.H.I.E.L.D. organization from the film series. Joss Whedon is signed on to write, and possibly direct the series. Details, such as whether or not any of the characters from any of Marvel films will appear is unknown at this time.
This is really something I wish I could be more excited about. Sure, Whedon's writing skills are so good they were able to get me out of my not-caring-about-TV mode and sit through seven seasons of Buffy the Vampire Slayer and the criminally short-lived Firefly, but this isn't what I want him to do.
It's almost guaranteed that none of the characters from the films are going to be in any more then a cameo appearance (unless they recast them, which would make me destroy things), and S.H.I.E.L.D. isn't really very interesting without the super heroes. Don't get me wrong, this will probably still be awesome. I just think it would have been more awesome for Whedon to devote himself to something not hampered by its very format.
