David O. Russell has come a long way from his film Spanking the Monkey, a movie about a son who has sexual feelings towards his mom. Yeah, it’s left of center…way left. After that he made Flirting with Disaster: bizarre, wonderful and one of my all time favorite comedies. The Fighter gave us a whole new Russell, one that dropped the obscurity and showed us he can put together an entertaining narrative without blurring the lines. The second trailer for his new movie Silver Linings Playbook reaffirms that transition and it's good.
There has been a lot of good buzz about this movie and after watching this new trailer, I can start to see what all the excitement is about. Maybe I’m just glad to see Robert De Niro in something that doesn’t make me automatically cringe. Maybe it’s that Lumineers song Ho Hey, that get’s played in so many commercials and trailers now, and I’m still not sick of hearing it (they’re also from Denver…represent). But I’m starting to get pretty excited about seeing this.
