Thursday, September 6, 2012 at 7:15AM Trailer for 'A Christmas Story 2' is Even Worse Than I Would've Imagined

A couple of weeks back, we here at GTBP reported that Warner Bros. (under their Warner Premiere Banner) were planning on releasing a sequel to A Christmas Story on Oct 30th. Aptly titled A Christmas Story 2; the sequel would be set 5 years after the first one. The idea made us laugh…a lot. Some felt we were being a little too harsh in criticizing a movie while not actually seeing any footage or even a trailer. Well a trailer has been released and I am…utterly…speechless. Take a look.
While the movie looks to be good natured and the argument could be made that it's simply just a little movie for the holidays; so why should we be so judgmental? That’s a good question and I will retort with this: Because it’s clearly a cash grab to feed off your nostalgia and I, we, all of us deserve better.
Clearly, there was no thought put into actually in creating a worthy sequel to the much beloved 1983 original. It’s simply just trying to mimic everything that was so loved in A Christmas Story but done so without any sort of care or regard to the characters or story. And yes, I felt that same way before seeing any footage and now after watching the trailer, it only confirms those initial gut reactions.
The wise move would’ve have been to leave A Christmas Story alone. No one was asking for a sequel. But you, the filmmakers behind this, gave it to us. And now you must face the wrath of derision. I’m sure it wasn’t the intent to create something so vapid and useless, but you did. And yes, I can confidently say that after watching the trailer.
Want more proof? This was directed by Brian Levant, who also gave us Snow Dogs, The Spy Next Door and Are We There Yet? Wow...utterly...speechless.
And if by some staggering miracle I am wrong and this movie is actually decent, I’ll rock that sailor costume…every day…for the rest of my life.

Why on earth if you had to do this wouldn't you make it as an adult Ralphie 20 years later dealing with his own family on Christmas?
Why on the planet if you had to do this wouldn't you create it as an older Ralph 20 decades later dealing with his own near near family members on Christmas?
