Fearless Forecast: It's A Good Weekend to 'Die Hard'

Is it A A Good Day to Die Hard?  Or is it a Safe Haven for Beautiful Creatures?  One thing is for sure; Beautiful Creatures will not make it in the top three.  A Good Day to Die Hard will, no doubt, make it first place this weekend but how much will it make?  Also, where will Safe Haven land?  It has the backing of a Nicholas Sparks film but has the cast of a Lifetime movie.

Though no movie, according to Rotten Tomatoes, is particularly good this weekend, Die Hard is an established franchise that will make money, no matter who’s directing.  The film is directed by John Moore, who can’t hold a cast or a story, but who cares, right?  Die Hard 5 will make money for two reasons: it’s a film with Bruce Willis playing John McClane and it’s a sequel and sequels always make money.  Die Hard only $7 million back in 1988, Die Hard 2: Die Harder made $21 million and Die Hard 3 earned slightly more with $22 million.  The last Die Hard earned $33 million, which would tell me that the fifth installment would earn just over $33 million.  Each film is getting progressively larger in scale and earning much more money with each new film.  My guess is that this latest film will make $35 million, a solid amount for this weekend.

Safe Haven is the latest film based on the book by Nicholas Sparks.  Sparks has written the books Nights in Rodanthe, The Notebook, Dear John, The Last Song, A Walk to Remember, Message in a Bottle, and The Lucky One.  Each film is terrible but seems to make a substantial amount; these films are like the Die Hard series for women.  The Lucky One made only $60 million in its entire US theatrical run, which isn’t great or terrible.  Dear John was the last film that made a huge amount but that had Channing TatumSafe Haven has that chick who danced on DWTS.  Bummer.  My guess is around $24 million.

Third place would go to Identity Thief with $15 million.  Beautiful Creatures will place fourth with $13 million.  This is the latest young adult novel about teen love and witches.  I don’t know if it has a huge following because I’m not a teen girl nor do I read books.

Warm Bodies will round out the top five with $9 million.

1. A Good Day To Die Hard $35 M

2. Safe Haven $24 M

3. Identity Thief $15 M

4. Beautiful Creatures $13 M

5. Warm Bodies $9 M
