Marvel's Future Film Projects Post-'Avengers'

"Guardians of the Galaxy" one of Marvel's future moviesWe all know Iron Man 3 and Thor 2 will be heading to movie theaters, after Marvel introduces The Avengers, The Amazing Spider-Man and Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance blockbuster movies next year.  Now we have updates regarding a few more titles the comic book inspired production company has in the works that moviegoers may not recognize.

Reports are Marvel is still planning an Ant-Man feature film, which director Edgar Wright (Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz) recently turned in a revised script for.

Edgar Wright Making 'Ant-Man' a Heist Picture

I'm still not in love with Ant-Man as a movie property; I just don't think there's enough there, especially with the knowledge that Marvel doesn't like one-and-dones. There's really not a demand for multiple Ant-Man adventures. Sure, if Disney wanted to do the short film route that's been discussed for some second- and third-tier characters in the Universe, fine. Or direct-to-DVD to see what kind of audience, great. But an Ant-Man feature film is sketchy.

So Edgar Wright, director of this week's Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, tells Vanity Fair he's going to change it up. And frankly, outside of hearing that Wright's directing it, this is the best possible news bar none. Wright says it's going to be...a heist picture?

"I know there’s a big stigma attached to [shrinking characters in films], mostly because every movie about shrinking has been about people in peril. I think it’d be great to do a shrinking film about a bad-ass secret agent... Even something like The Incredible Shrinking Man, which is a fantastic film, is about a guy in trouble. But this is going to be nothing like that. It’s essentially a high-tech spy heist film with somebody with a very particular power.

Why Ant-Man Won't Be in 'The Avengers'

When the cast of The Avengers was officially introduced at Comic-Con on Saturday night, we wondered if Ant-Man was no longer part of the equation or if a contract hadn't been set in stone with an actor yet, or if it was just too early to tell what role he might play. Turns out, Joss Whedon said just hours before the Avengers panel that there would be no Ant-Man, not that the film will miss another hero.

There's more to it than that, however, as Cinema Blend discovered when talking to Edgar Wright. Wright is the director of the upcoming Scott Pilgrim vs. The World as well as Hot Fuzz and Shaun of the Dead, and he's the guy giving Ant-Man a movie makeover, too. And he says having the character in The Avengers really doesn't work.

"I talked to Kevin Feige about that a while back where we just discussed about whether he would be in The Avengers. The thing is, the script that I’ve written, you know, whether it’s next or not I don’t know, the chronology of it or the way it works wouldn’t really fit in with what they do. "And my film is very much an introduction to that character, and so it wasn’t something where it felt right to introduce him in that film. Maybe if I do the solo Ant-Man film and maybe there’s a later Avengers then they could draft him in later. But it didn’t work with the kind of the angle that we were going to do with the origin that I’d written."

Will Adrien Brody Get To Play Ant-Man?

He's been in a couple movies this summer and now Adrien Brody may be staking a claim for summer 2012. Independent reports suggest he's raising his hand to play Hank Pym, also known as Ant-Man, for director Edgar Wright's standalone film and possibly Marvel's Avengers, should Joss Whedon keep the character around as expected. However, there's one big voice of dissension, as well.

John Campea, formerly of The Movie Blog and now a writer for Script to Screen, Tweeted that he had heard Brody was the pick and Latino Review followed up with Brody's agents at Paradigm who, in an unusual move, confirmed that they were pursuing the project, although there's been no pen to paper moves just yet. Then Campea fired back that Wright told him none of it's true.

'Ant-Man' Happening Sometime After 'The Avengers'

Edgar Wright has been linked to an Ant-Man movie for a while. Like Thor and maybe even The Hulk, there are some substantial hurdles just with presenting that comic book as a film. Each of those titles has issues either with the way the character is realized or the setting that could pose problems down the line.

Coming Soon asked Marvel's Kevin Feige where the Ant-Man film is on the company's to-do list now that Wright has completed production on Scott Pilgrim vs. The World. "We sat down and we started working on a calendar of when to get him back into it once he finishes promoting Scott Pilgrim," Feige said, a clear confirmation that this is the direction Marvel wants to go. "So I think towards the end of this year, early next year we'd start looking at early prep for that, but certainly for a release date after The Avengers."
