'Mad Men' Leading the Way at the 2011 Emmys

We normally don't cover TV unless it's major but I guess Emmys fall under that category and a lot of the actors nominated are also movie stars as well.  Despite the fact that there has been a ton of great new series such as Game of Thrones and my personal favorite, Walking Dead, AMC's Mad Men still has everyone's attention with 19 nominations edging out Boardwalk Empire with 18.  I'm surprised that Walking Dead didn't get any nominations.  If you haven't seen it and love zombie films, go watch it.  You won't be disappointed.

Academy Awards Makes Changes To Best Picture Nominees

Was anyone truly expecting these new changes to make a difference? Not really. At least we can now feel a little better about ourselves in knowing that we don't have too much filler for a mandated 10 nominees list for Best Picture next year. It was only two years a go that the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences made the changes to double the nominations list from 5 contenders to a total of 10. Such a massive change allowed hidden gems from the year to make the list even though it never really had a chance to win the tops prize (I’m looking at you The Blind Side, The Kids Are All Right and District 9).

2011 MTV Awards and A New Clip for 'Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part Two'

With all due respect the MTV Awards used to be a place where young adult fare could thrive, away from the uber-serious Oscar contenders. Now, they seem to cater to the teen vamp devotees and its really sad. It was a Twilight-fest and surrounding talent that walked away with most of the awards with a few delightful surprises (Emma Stone wins best comedic performance for Easy A!).

Justin Timberlake Did Not Win At the NAACP Awards

Or did he?  Actually, being a white guy nominated for Best Supporting Actor in a Motion Picture at the NAACP Awards is a huge honor.  Plus, there's no way he could've beaten Samuel L. Jackson, whose a baaad mutha-shut-yo-mouth!

Tyler Perry usually dominates these award shows and once again he did not disappoint earning 19 nominations.  They should really call this Tyler Perry Presents NAACP Image Awards.  He won Best Director for For Colored Girls, and also the Best Picture award for the same film.  Perry also took home Outstanding Comedy Series for Tyler Perry's House of Payne edging out Glee and 30 Rock.  Lack of black representation probably hurt their chances.

Oscar Results and GTBP Scorecard

If you missed the Oscars telecast, you didn't miss much. I hate to say that, because I'm a big fan of the annual event—I treat it pretty much the same way I do Super Bowl Sunday: we have friends over, make tons of appetizers, have plenty of drinks, and play games while watching so we can have some winners of our own. But this year, the show just didn't do much for me. I thought that James Franco and Anne Hathaway brought pretty much nothing to the table, and were just really "safe" and uninteresting hosts. When Billy Crystal came out to tell an amusing story, I honestly thought for a second that the show's producers had realized that things weren't working and had decided to go to the bullpen for a tried-and-true host to handle the show's home stretch.

Despite my overall poor impression of this year's broadcast, there were some things to like. I thought the homages to Academy Awards ceremonies of the past were great, but wished we'd gotten more of them. And I really enjoyed the continuing gimmick of having the previous year's Best Actor and Actress winners—Jeff Bridges and Sandra Bullock in this case—deliver heartfelt messages to the current year's nominees while presenting those awards. As for acceptance speeches, I thought Aaron Sorkin's was the best—although he probably benefited from being preceded by the truly awkward Kirk Douglas appearance. Other than these few highlights, though, I thought the show was pretty ho-hum.
