Rooney Mara Chooses ‘Side Effects’

Everything surrounding Steven Soderbergh is big news as he counts down the days until his self-imposed retirement.  In today’s news, courtesy of Variety, we learn that the lovely Rooney Mara will be replacing Blake Lively in his upcoming Side Effects.  She will join Jude Law, Channing Tatum and Catherine Zeta-Jones in the role of a young woman who turns to large amounts of prescription drugs to help her cope with her husband’s impending release from jail. 

Is this a case of severe impatience or the old Hollywood axiom of going with the hot hand?

First Photos from Oliver Stone's 'Savages'

Oliver Stone used to make movies with a certain edge to them (i.e. JFK, Platoon, and Natural Born Killers) before he became enthralled with the letter W (i.e. World Trade Center, W, Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps) and his movies became bland.  I’m not sure how a letter can have that power, but perhaps whatever strange malaise possessed him will be exorcised when this flick come out. Savages was adapted by Shane Salerno (Shaft) and Don Winslow from Winslow's crime drama novel of the same name.

Blake Lively Next Up for 'Pride and Prejudice and Zombies' Lead

Gossip Girl and total babe Blake Lively is being courted for the lead role in Pride and Prejudice and Zombies by newly-installed director Craig Gillespie, according to Twitch.  This is the same lead role that Mia Wasikowska, Emma Stone and Scarlett Johansson have all said "no thanks" to.

Lively held previous film roles in the Green Lantern and The Town, so she's got the acting chops of a leading lady.  I personally thought she killed it as Ben Affleck's friend with benefits in The Town.

Green Lantern has the world in his hand. He has the ability to manifest whatever his mind can think of, into reality with the ring when it comes to protection. Hal Jordan will be the 1^st of the Green Lanterns that we get to see DC bring to life. I for one am excited.

Blake Lively in the Running for Cuarón's 'Gravity'

There is still some question about the depth of Blake Lively's abilities. Gossip Girl is a fluffy, fashionable soap opera, and while that alone doesn't mean she can't act, it's not exactly like joining the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art. She'll have a chance to show something more substantial in Ben Affleck's The Town and Green Lantern will be bodysuitastic, but the female lead in comic book movies is not really where you go for quality acting.

So that she has risen to the top of the list for Alfonso Cuarón's sci-fi survivor story, Gravity with Robert Downey, Jr. is worth discussing. The role had been intended for Angelina Jolie, but she backed out. Then after a couple months, Scarlett Johansson emerged as the top prospect. Now it's Lively and Johansson in the running, which tells me Warner Bros. loves Blake's work.
