Interview - Clifton Collins from 'Boondock Saints II'

Earlier this summer, we had the chance to talk to actor Clifton Collins, Jr., who has had a very busy year or so. In addition to all the films, he won a CMT award, believe it or not, for directing the video for the Zac Brown Band's "Chicken Fried." And the awards show was on his birthday, which had to be a nice bonus. But between Star Trek, Crank: High Voltage, Sunshine Cleaning, Extract, and now Boondock Saints II: All Saints Day, there has been no shortage of opportunities to see Collins' work. In fact, Boondock Saints II is expanding into a few more cities this weekend, so if you haven't had a chance to check it out yet, maybe you can get to it over the next few days. Our interview with Clifton, which we conducted this summer, first ran back in August and covers a little bit of everything.

'Boondock Saints II' Expanding This Weekend

Over the weekend, Boondock Saints II: All Saints Day did very well considering the low theater count it had. It placed 14th for the frame, but the $8,000 per-screen average in 68 houses led to a $546,000 debut. That's a big enough vote of confidence for the film's distributor, Apparition (along with Sony), to expand the movie into more cities beginning this weekend.

Having already premiered in New York, Los Angeles, Philadelphia, and Boston, Boondock has been "demanded," much the same way Paranormal Activity did, and fans in Seattle, San Diego, Chicago, Detroit, Dallas, Atlanta, Houston, and apparently a few more to be announced later this week. As we have with previous expansions - Paranormal, The Hurt Locker - we'll try to get a full list of cities if not theaters by the end of the week.

Watch the 'Boondock Saints II' Opening Sequence

On Friday, The Boondock Saints II: All Saints Day arrives in theaters, a decade afer the notorious first film. Troy Duffy may or may not have earned a reputation for...well, for being a prick back in the late 1990s, and the documentary Overnight explores his amazing rise to rookie filmmaker for Harvey Weinstein to his almost as immediate fall from grace based on, the documentary suggests, Duffy's abusive attitude towards others and his own vainglory.

There's probably something to it, based on how disgraceful the theatrical release was back in 1999 ($30,000 in ticket sales), and even for Harvey Weinstein, that's a bad result. The documentary indicates that Harvey was just one of the people Duffy pissed off (or pissed on, perhaps) during his brief ride, and as a result he had his career turned upside down. New 'Boondock Saints II: All Saints Day' Poster

At the end of the month, we'll see what kind of drawing power the name Boondock Saints has. It's one of those urban legends movies: Everybody's claimed they've seen it, but because it did zero theatrical business and only gained popularity on DVD, it's kind of hard to tell. So the sequel's out on October 30th, and even though it probably won't be in 3,000 theaters or anything, we should be able to tell if part of the original film's success was, well, its lack of success. I've heard from a lot of people who are interested, so we'll see how it plays out. Right now, it's new poster time:

Second Trailer for 'Boondock Saints II'

About a month ago, we got our first look at Boondock Saints II: All Saints Day, a sequel roughly a decade in the making. Lots of excitement is brewing for this one, a film that made all of its fans with the home video release. After all, the first film made less than $50,000 in theaters.

But once it hit DVD, the thing became a big hit for director Troy Duffy and he took his sweet time getting the sequel off the ground, but now it's back and we'll see it in theaters on October 30th. Returning are Sean Patrick Flannery, Norman Reedus, and Billy Connolly, but he's also got Peter Fonda this time around. We'll see which Fonda shows up, I guess. The other trailer was Red Band, so this one has been sanitized for your protection. It's also got a few new things, I think, so that'll make it worth watching.
