Olivia Munn teams with Broken Lizard to make babiesHow long has it been since we've seen a Broken Lizard comedy?  My last taste of this hilarious, foul mouthed crew was Beerfest, which left me utterly disappointed after comedic classics Super Troopers and Club Dread set the bar high.  Never the less, writer/director/actor and Broken Lizard front man Jay Chandrasekar is back in front of and behind the camera for the new comedy The Babymakers.

'Super Troopers 2' Soon to Become a Reality

I'm one-for-whatever with the Broken Lizard guys. I liked Super Troopers...and that was it. So, the news of a sequel to Super Troopers - something that's been rumored about for years - is tough to get really excited about. It's a ten-year-old concept that has been followed up by not just misfires but outright bad movies. I get the inclination to make a sequel, especially now that there's nothing else for Broken Lizard to hang its hat on, but there's a little boy who cried wolf going on here.

Be that as it may, Jay Chandrasekhar, Paul Soter, Steve Lemme, and Erik Stolhanske talked to Movie Cultists, who confirmed that financing is in place for Troopers 2 and that the group will try making a deal with Fox for distribution. “We’re like, three drafts into it,” Lemme said. “It’s funny, because we have an independent financier — we have a lot of independent financiers — who are like, ‘Give us that fucking movie.’ And we’re like, ‘We will, we will but we have to go through a studio first.’ But it’s a great thing to go to a studio and say, ‘We have the money.’”

Red Band Trailer for Broken Lizard's 'Slammin' Salmon'

Maybe this isn't a sign of trouble, but I wasn't encouraged by my own reaction to the new Red Band trailer for Broken Lizard's The Slammin' Salmon. "Well at least Michael Clarke Duncan is funny," I said to myself, realizing how far down that is on my checklist of sentences I'd never gotten around to saying. I don't get the Broken Lizard thing anymore. Liked a lot of things about Super Troopers, waded through Club Dread, barely endured Beerfest, and now we're facing this movie about the dysfunctional wait staff at a restaurant owned by a retired boxer (Duncan). Like a lot of movies that come out of sketch comedy troops, this probably would've made a great skit or even a series of sketches with the same characters, but that doesn't make it a movie.
