'Buffy' Remake Might Be Dead, Internet Fandom Rejoices

Quick thought experiment: When I say Buffy the Vampire Slayer, what do you think of?  The cult classic TV show that introduced most of us to Joss Whedon, of course.  What you don't think of, is the 1992 movie which was radically changed by the studio and ultimately disowned by screenwriter Whedon.  It failed both critically and commercially.  Nonetheless, Warner Bros expressed interest in a reboot without any input from Whedon, proceeding to irritate both him and fans of the original show.

'Buffy the Vampire Slayer' Script In the Works, Joss Whedon Unhappy About It

Because Hollywood has yet to find a good idea it can't run into the ground, Warner Bros. today announced plans to reboot Buffy the Vampire Slayer, the franchise made popular by Joss Whedon in the 90s.

Whedon penned the original 1992 Buffy the Vampire Slayer film and created the spin-off television series starring Sarah Michelle Gellar, which ran from 1997-2003. However, he will have no involvement in this reboot.

Instead, 29-year-old actress Whit Anderson is writing the screenplay. Anderson told reporters that she "didn't really watch much television at all, but I always watched Buffy the Vampire Slayer."

Rumor Patrol: Vanessa Hudgens in 'Buffy' Movie?

If all of this is true, we may have dodged a bullet. Considering the source is Showbiz Spy, true may not completely enter into the equation. But here's the deal, anyway.

"An inside source" says Vanessa Hudgens was in talks to star in the movie rehash of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, a film that's been bandied about for a while, although we kind of thought it was presently a dead issue, especially with Joss Whedon focusing on The Avengers and rewriting the script for Captain America. He had already more or less shown us the toe tag on this project, what, almost a year ago now, I guess. Hudgens passed, in this version of events, because Twilight and all those vampire TV shows are so popular that she viewed it as overkill. "She felt that with Twilight still so massive, Buffy would not be the best option right now," said the source.

Joss Whedon Actively Not Involved in 'Buffy' Movie

Maybe you've heard that they're remaking the Buffy the Vampire Slayer movie instead of spinning off the TV series into a film. If you've hadn't heard about that until now, Joss Whedon won't be involved, which is strange since he not only created the characters and wrote the film, but of course, has been the driving force in the Buffyverse ever since.

But Whedon tells Entertainment Weekly that the producers of the new film did contact his agent to gauge his interest in returning in some capacity...but only after the announcement was made about the new movie.

What Good is a 'Buffy' Movie Without Joss Whedon?

This seems to me to be the worst idea imaginable. I mean, bring back Buffy the Vampire Slayer as a movie - that doesn't bother me at all - but to do it without Joss Whedon? That is development suicide.

Fran Rubel Kuzui, who directed the original film based on Whedon's script, is involved in the remake of the first movie, with Vertigo Entertainment producing. According to The Hollywood Reporter, "The new Buffy film, however, would have no connection to the TV series, nor would it use popular supporting characters like Angel, Willow, Xander or Spike." There's no studio involvement, no script, no writer, and no star. And it's also pretty much bullshit as far as I can see.
