Matt Reeves: 'Cloverfield' Sequel Still "A Priority"

I don't know that there's a lot of middle ground on the subject of Cloverfield; you either get it and dig it or you don't. I dig it, although I can understand why people think it's much ado about very little.

But I do think they're wasting a bit of time getting the sequel going. It's been two-and-a-half years already, and it will be at least four before the follow-up gets here. But it will happen, according to the film's director Matt Reeves. "It really isn't the moment for [the sequel] to go any further than it has, but it continues to be a priority for both [JJ Abrams and I]," Reeves tells MTV. "JJ is very immersed in putting together Super 8. He's in pre-production and really, really passionately getting that together. And I'm passionately finishing Let Me In."

J.J. Abrams: 'Super 8' Not a 'Cloverfield' Sequel

You know that new J.J. Abrams movie that will debut its trailer with Iron Man 2 this weekend? Well, maybe you don't. You probably weren't supposed to, but news of the surprise film - called Super 8 was leaked the other day, along with the nugget that it's so closely guarded that Paramount has electronically locked the reels of film that contain the trailer until Thursday afternoon.

Abrams confirmed to Vulture that the electronic locks are true but without saying what the movie is about denied any connection to Cloverfield.

Uncertain 'Cloverfield 2' Talk Surfaces Again

Matt Reeves directed Cloverfield, as most fans of the 2008 monster movie know. Almost immediately, there was talk of a sequel, and why not? Outside of The Dark Knight, which had the best, most effective sustained marketing campaign in years, Cloverfield moved the bar for viral marketing higher than any movie between The Blair Witch Project and Paranormal Activity. Soon, fake viral videos started popping up...or were they fake?

Well, yes. They were. But the point is, the audience had become so trained by the first round of videos that for a few days, some people bought into the sequel. But we never heard it wouldn't happen, and in fact, Reeves and J.J. Abrams all but confirmed the sequel would take place when the time was right. But it's still not the time. Reeves tells MTV, "I can tell you nothing, [but] there are these spikes in activity. There are things that we keep talking about and things spike up. It very well may happen."

Is This 'Cloverfied 2' Viral Video?

So what are we looking at here, exactly? I can't say for sure. It could be an out-of-the-blue viral video for Cloverfield 2, which is what it looks like it's trying to be, or it could be a homemade hoax.

That's the thing about what we would expect to see from the Cloverfield sequel: It would be quite a bit like this. Shaky cam, kind of ho-hum in its presentation until some big finish, and based on what we've heard about the second film, it would be set in Japan. Then again, something like that is so easy to produce at home, this could have come from anywhere. Watch it for yourself and see what you think. There hasn't been any real progress on the sequel at an official level, and this seems way too early for something like that, but I'm not alone thinking there's a very slim chance it could be legit; Fangoria is curious about the video's origin, too.

J.J. Abrams Talks 'Cloverfield' Sequel

It is, of course, possible sequel fodder for a couple of reasons: It was sort of open-ended, and it made plenty of money.

J.J. Abrams talked about a possible follow-up to Cloverfield today at WonderCon in San Francisco, and while most of the questions were about Star Trek, he was pretty candid about his thoughts on a sequel. "The key obviously at doing any kind of sequel, certainly this film included, is that it better not be a business decision," Geek Tyrant quoted Abrams as saying. "If you’re going to do something, it should be because you’re really inspired to do it."
