Spike Lee's 'Oldboy' to Somehow Have "Darker" Ending

Fans of the original Korean revenge film are probably just as perplexed as I am at that statement, as it's hard to imagine being possible.  But, according to producer Roy Lee, that's what we might have to look forward to. In addition to confirmation that Colin Firth is going to play the villain (as we previously reported the possibility of), we got some other details about how Spike Lee's version of Oldboy will differ from the original.

World War II Drama 'The Railway Man' Adds Rachel Weisz

Rachel Weisz (The Constant Gardener) has signed on to join fellow Oscar winner Colin Firth (The King’s Speech) in Jonathan Teplitzky’s adaptation of Eric Lomax’s World War II biography, The Railway Man.  Lomax’s story focuses on two distinct periods of his life.  The first part relates the torture the young Scotsman suffered as a Japanese prisoner-of-war aboard Burma’s infamous “Death Railway” and then his post-war struggles to find inner peace and forgiveness.

All Aboard! Colin Firth is 'The Railway Man'

I didn't mean to give the impression that Oscar winner Colin Firth (The King's Speech) will play a train conductor in his next film The Railway Man, quite the oppsite.  The Railway Man is actually a story based on the personal account of a former British army officer, Eric Lomax who was tortured by the Japanese in World War II during the construction of the infamous "death railway".  Decades later Lomax goes on a mission to exact revenge on his captors.

When it comes to literary adaptations on any novel I always ask "Is it worth it?" By that I'm implying the need to go research the book, read if interested, wait to see the trailer and wait for the film to be released in theaters. All based on the notion that the film must inspire and respect the core themes on the page? John Le Carré's novel Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy provided this exact problem to director Tomas Alfredson, who's method is both brave and into the wild where he admits: "We agreed that this was probably a totally impossible book to turn into a film".
