Watch the First Three Minutes of Coppola's 'Tetro'

We showed you the trailer for Francis Ford Coppola 's Tetro over the weekend, and while the cinematography looks terrific, the story is hard to grasp.

What we know about Tetro, Coppola's first script since The Conversation over 35 years ago, is that it's a family drama set in Argentina. Bennie (Alden Ehrenreich ) travels to Buenos Aires to look for his older brother, Tetro (Vincent Gallo ), who has been missing for over 10 years. When the brothers reunite, old conflicts and secrets rise to the surface. Now Coppola has released the first three minutes of his new film, and even though it's mostly just a credits sequence, you can again see how beautifully it's photographed, so kudos to cinematographer Mihai Malaimare, Jr., who also lensed Coppola's Youth Without Youth, notable also for the way it looked.

Trailer - Francis Ford Coppola's 'Tetro'

You know those commercials that spoof art films by shooting everything in black and white and showing weird cafe scenes and crying clowns? That's exactly what the trailer for Francis Ford Coppola's Tetro reminds me of: A spoof of an art film.

His last movie, Youth Without Youth, was a weird exercise with Tim Roth and Alexandra Maria Lara, but it was gorgeously photographed, so the black and white cinematography in Tetro has my attention. Everything else, though? I dunno. Watch it and see if you don't think it's trying to be weird for the sake of being weird. I'm of the mind that taking that approach almost never works.
