As 'The Wolfman' Turns: Elfman's Score is Back

If The Wolfman were a girl I was kind of seeing, I'd come up with any excuse to not return her calls. To put it mildly, the bitch crazy. I'm sure there has been a big studio movie that's had this many problems in the past few years, but I don't remember one with such a high profile. If it's even possible, there's more stuff happening behind the scenes on this one.

First, for your information if you're new and for your enjoyment if you're not, here's a quick recap of the nonsense. Director Mark Romanek is bounced (or bounces), and he's replaced with Joe Johnston. The release date is pushed back from April 2009 - following a Comic Con outing in 2008 - and just when you think the November release date would stick, the effects suck and the studio pushes the movie back again. Then Danny Elfman removes his score from consideration because he has to work on Alice in Wonderland, which the studio follows up by firing the editors and then firing their replacements. Got it? OK. Now Elfman's score is back in the film, according to Movie Score Magazine, and you would expect them to kind of know a thing or two about that sort of thing. The movie's out in three weeks. Time to stop screwing around, don't you think?

Elfman No Longer Composing the 'Wolfman' Score

I'll probably receive a host of contrary comments on this, but I've never reaaly gotten the whole Danny Elfman fascination. His signature scores don't strike me as sounding all that different, and the ones that feel more like mortgage payments - Wanted and Notorious in the past 18 months, for example - sure don't stand out all that often. Nacho Libre, anyone?

My own feelings aside, how in the world do you pick anyone but Elfman to score The Wolfman? Again, go back to those signature scores Elfman has composed, and this thing seems tailor made for his gothic symphonies. Well, he was working on the score, but with the film's delayed post-production, there are now scheduling conflicts keeping Elfman out of the project, according to CineMusic. But just as you hire Randy Newman for jaunty cartoon scores (with whimsical original songs), you should always fit your dark monster movie into Elfman's schedule.

Danny Elfman to Score 'Terminator Salvation'

Danny Elfman will compose the score for Terminator Salvation, telling MTV he just started on the project this week. A lot of people might think this is a strange fit, with Elfman's signature sound featured on a lot of Tim Burton films. But you know what was really strange? Seeing his name in the closing credits of Notorious. Yeah, go figure.

Elfman has not decided whether or not he'll use the classic musical cue that has been featured in the other Terminator films. In a way, I'd say it's a bad idea to use it because that worked so well in the present and now we're moving forward to the future, although, it's actually the past in the story because the terminators haven't been sent back to kill John Connor yet, which is really the inciting incident of the whole saga.
