'Dark Shadows': New Cast Picture

Has an extremely-pasty Michael Jackson look-a-like been replaced? Thankfully... yes.  Johnny Depp no longer looks like he slathered a thick layer of sunscreen on and can be seen as Barnabas Collins in the first cast photo Dark Shadows, a supernatural soap opera based on the 1966-71 TV series by the same name.  I must say, the resulting look had an amazing american-gothic appeal to it and I'm sure Tim Burton won't disappoint on aesthetical grounds.  See the picture after the jump.

Chloe Moretz on 'Dark Shadows', 'Kick-Ass 2', 'Hugo' & 'Hick'

So we got our first look at Tim Burton's feature film adaptation Dark Shadows, based on the classic 60s vampire television series, and well... Johnny Depp is very pale as Barnabas Collins.  Also starring in the film is Chloe Moretz (as Carolyn Stoddard), who spoke with Movies.com about the tone in Burton's vampire film, as well as her upcoming film Hugo, controversial film Hick ("from author/screenwriter Andrea Portes’ autobiographical story and writer/director Derick Martini") and the possibility of Kick-Ass 2.

Johnny Depp in Set Photos From Tim Burton's 'Dark Shadows'

Hey it's not every day there's a vampire movie I actually want to see.  Quirky filmmaker Tim Burton is teaming with Johnny Depp for the millionth time, now connecting on a film adaptation of the 1960's supernatural soap opera Dark Shadows.  The proof is in the pudding, when these two collaborate good movies are the end result.  

Joining Depp will be some familiar names (Mrs. Burton) Helena Bonham Carter, Chloe Moretz, Michelle Pfeiffer and Jackie Earle Haley.

Depp, Burton Making 'Dark Shadows' Next September

Just this past Friday, in a conversation about Johnny Depp potentially playing Pancho Villa, I mentioned that the film would have to wait until Depp got through his stack of projects, among them Dark Shadows. That's the Tim Burton movie based on the ABC vampire soap opera from the 1960s and early 1970s. It's a great franchise opportunity, perfectly cut out for Depp and Burton.

We hadn't heard much about when it might happen, other than Burton saying it would probably be his next project after Alice in Wonderland. But Sci Fi Wire caught up with producer Graham King, whose Young Victoria with Emily Blunt is in my stack of awards screeners for the week. King told the site, "We're actually going to shoot that film next September/October with Tim Burton and Johnny. We've been working on the script a lot, even though he's working on Alice."

Burton Confirms 'Dark Shadows' Shooting Next Year

Tim Burton will showcase bits of Alice in Wonderland in a couple days at Comic Con, but what about next spring, after he's done working on the first big screen adaptation of the classic story in nearly 60 years? He recently confirmed that he and Johnny Depp will work together again, for what seems like the 30th time.

Dark Shadows will actually only be the eighth time the famed director-actor combo have joined forces, and if there's a project that fits them better than this one, it's probably one of those movies they've already made. Dark Shadows, if you don't know, was a soap opera back about 40 years ago, but unlike General Hospital, it was about vampires. Strange for the 60s, right? Or then again, it was the 60s, so maybe not.
