Doctor Who Movie Coming from 'Harry Potter' Director?

Director David Yates isn't looking to take a break now that the Harry Potter franchise has closed the books forever.  He'll look to bring another iconic British character to the big screen, as Variety reports Yates will align himself with BBC to develop a Doctor Who movie based on the long time sci-fi TV series.  The first Doctor Who TV series began airing in 1963.

Fans of the show shouldn't expect to see current Doctor Who stars David Tennant or Matt Smith make the feature film jump though.

Rumor Patrol: Johnny Depp as Doctor Who?

I want you to pick up the nearest salt shaker and take a grain, maybe even two, and add them to this story to taste. Johnny Depp, it is rumored, has been confirmed for Doctor Who. Well, see, on the one hand, there's very little Depp couldn't do. On the other hand...does he have to do everything?

The source of the rumor is PubArticles, which is a bit suspicious, but now the original isn't even online, so it's downgraded to dubious. However, Tor.com picked it up, and that's a far more reputable sci-fi blog, so because it's definitely interesting, we thought we'd address it. I can buy Depp as the Doctor, of course, and that's one way to sell tickets where, sadly, a David Tennant probably would not outside the fanbase the BBC series already has. Personally, I don't think Depp has any time in his schedule for something like this, especially since the story has a Doctor Who film out in two years. That just can't happen, not with Pirates, Dark Shadows, and The Lone Ranger all on the way, as well as some smaller films he'll pop up in and the promotional tours for the tentpoles.

Man Takes The Dirt Nap in Doctor Who's Tardis

Proving that it does indeed take all kinds, 26-year-old Welshman Sebastian Neal had his final wishes honored this week, when the fan of Doctor Who was buried in a coffin modeled after the iconic Tardis from the series.

In addition to his custom casket, Neale's funeral also featured the Doctor Who theme instead of more traditional funeral music and mourners were greeted with a quote from the famed time traveling scientist: "I'm a time lord, I am not a human being. I walk in eternity." The theme of the funeral was underscored by a line of dialogue from The Dalek Invasion of Earth:

"One day, I will come back. Yes, I shall come back. Until then there must be no regrets, no tears, no anxieties. Just go forward in all your beliefs, and prove to me that I am not mistaken in mine."

BBC Developing a 'Dr. Who' Movie - Finally

We might get a Dr. Who movie, and very likely, it would star David Tennant, the actor who really helped resurrect the series on the BBC in the past few years. Tennant recently filmed his final episodes of the series, and Matt Smith will take over the role for the next official season. But it could be that a movie was part of Tennant's thinking all along.

The BBC (via Filmonic) reports that, "Tennant will firstly appear in three [Dr. Who] specials, starting with The Waters of Mars in November. Meanwhile, Doctor Who may be heading for the big screen after a spokeswoman for BBC Films confirmed that “a script is in development”.

Who's the New 'Doctor Who'?

His name is Matt Smith, and he's the next Doctor Who.

Smith, a 26-year-old actor with only a handful of credits, will succeed David Tennant, whose work as the iconic science fiction hero helped make the series relevant again to audiences worldwide over the past four years. The BBC made the announcement this weekend christening Smith, the eleventh and youngest actor to play the legendary role. Doctor Who first aired on the Beeb in 1963, was televised continuously through 1989, and has enjoyed a renaissance since 2005 with Tennant in the starring role.
