Huh? Another 'Darko' Film on the Way?

I'm assuming you didn't see S. Darko. There are people who did buy it or rent it, but since the movie never came out in theaters and appeared to be a wrongheaded sequel to a beloved cult classsic, you probably avoided it whether you meant to or not.

Now it appears as though Fox might want a third Darko film, and I vote for Darko Milicic. Now that's a scary story. Bloody Disgusting says the studio is already developing the threequel, although there aren't any specifics immediately available.

Trailer - The DVD Sequel 'S. Darko'

What's your take on S. Darko, the Donnie Darko follow-up? I'm against it, by and large, for the very practical reason that nobody involved in the original is around for the sequel. With the exception, that is, of S. Darko herself, Daveigh Chase.

You might remember Chase from the original movie as Donnie's kid sister, Samantha. Or you remember her jumping out of the goddamn TV in The Ring. She's on Big Love these days, and for this film, obviously, Samantha's the main character. If Richard Kelly were taking the reins on this or if a meteorite didn't play a pivotal role in the story, I might be more easily convinced that this one's got merit. The direct-to-DVD release doesn't help, either.

'Donnie Darko' Sequel Not Just a Bad Dream

If you're going to Cannes this month, be on the lookout for a script called S. Darko, which according to Screen Daily is billed as the sequel to the 2001 cult hit Donnie Darko. Yep, you too could grab the international distribution rights for the sequel. How exciting is that?

Well, it's decidedly less exciting when you learn that Richard Kelly, who wrote and directed the original, won't be involved. Or, perhaps, after Southland Tales, that's not such a bad thing. So if Richard Kelly is out of the loop, obviously, there'll be no Jake Gyllenhaal. However, for this decreasingly intriguing sequel, Daviegh Chase will be back as Donnie's younger sister, Samantha, hence the S. Darko. Chase's best moment in film was without question as Samara, the creepy kid from The Ring.
