'Fanboys': Attack of the Clones?

There was a hell of a lot more talk about Fanboys not being released than there ever was about Fanboys after it was released. If you'll recall, it's a movie about Star Wars fanatics who break into Skywalker Ranch to steal a copy of The Phantom Menace in the months prior to its release.

IFor well over a year, the film stayed on the shelf because of re-shoots, edits, re-edits, and finally, the whims of the Weinsteins. But when it finally arrived in theaters, it made less than a million dollars. One of the film's stars, Dan Fogler, says that director Kyle Newman is undaunted by performance of the movie and may be working on a sequel. Fogler tells Moviehole that Newman would probably eschew studio backing this time, for obvious reasons. "If you want to do it right, do it independently", the actor says, adding, "If he could come up with the right script, and get everyone together again, I would definitely do it."

Movie Review - 'Fanboys'

Fanboys Starring Sam Huntington, Chris Marquette, Jay Baruchel, and Dan Fogler Directed by Kyle Newman Rated PG-13

Proof that even great inside jokes stop getting laughs sooner or later, Fanboys is a real love song to not just Star Wars but also its ardent fans. The fans of the Lucasverse comprise a massive worldwide community, but and they should really find plenty to enjoy here. It's an inside joke if you're not a fanboy, someone whose life revolves around the Death Star. If you're somewhat well-versed in all of this, you should be fine. But the joke gets stale about an hour in, after some very funny or at least amusing situations and characters present themselves. Two best friends have grown apart in the three years since high school. Eric (Sam Huntington) has abandoned his boyhood dream of being a comic book animator, and works as second in command at his father's car dealership. Linus (Chris Marquette) still revels in all things Jedi, and still hangs out playing video games with the most socially inept of their friends, Windows (Jay Baruchel) and Hutch (Dan Fogler). In the months leading up to the release of Star Wars Episode One, Linus revisits a plan he and Eric hatched in grade school: Break into George Lucas' Skywalker Ranch. In 1998, the scheme has been updated. Now the plan is to break in and steal a print of Episode One months before its release. Everybody loves the idea except Eric, who has grown up and moved on to his boring adult life.

New Clips from 'Star Wars' Comedy, 'Fanboys'

I'm hoping Fanboys is as much fun as the concept, although it could be one of those things where the build up - in this case, roughly a year or so because the film's release has been delayed a couple of times - creates a bit of fool's gold.

Love the concept: Before the release of Star Wars: Episode I, some geeks trek cross-country to break into George Lucas' Skywalker Ranch and steal a copy of the film for themselves. To all Star Wars nerds: Sorry about the use of the word "trek" in the previous sentence. 'Fanboys' Trailer is Finally Here

All right, seriously, why in hell has this movie been delayed for almost two years? We've got a brand new trailer for Fanboys, and in addition to looking like it's certainly funny enough to compete for your hard-earned cash (remember, I saw Disaster Movie), the cast introductions at the end are priceless.Here's what you need to know: Star Wars nerds head to Skywalker Ranch to steal an early copy of Episode One: The Phantom Menace. That's right, it's a period piece. I hope they can convincingly portray 1999. So watch the trailer and ask yourself why this just got bumped another couple of months into 2009?

Long-Delayed 'Fanboys' Gets a Familiar Poster

The Weinstein Company is not Miramax, although I suppose that's a common mistake, especially since both companies are still around. A few years ago, Bob and Harvey split from Disney after a pretty frigid couple of years. How could that surprise anyone, really? But the Weinsteins persevered and started their own company, and Disney maintained ownership of Miramax. And while the Weinsteins have attracted a great number of quality films in the past four years, I think they've done a pretty lousy job on the distribution end, dropping the ball on films like The Matador, Transamerica, Proof, Lucky Number Slevin, Grace is Gone, and Cassandra's Dream by not keeping them in theaters long enough or putting them in enough theaters to gain significant audiences.The trend of questionable distribution has continued this awards season, with a recent announcement that the Weinstein Company will move five of its eight movies recently scheduled to debut in 2008 back to 2009, including the Oscar hopeful The Road. One of the other films in that group is Fanboys, which fanboys have been looking forward to for some time. The movie, about a group of Star Wars nerds that sneak onto Skywalker Ranch to steal an early copy of The Phantom Menace, began production almost three years ago, and its release date has been moved around like a foster child.Good cast for this type of thing: Jay Baruchel, Dan Fogler, and Kristen Bell, plus a hell of a lot of cameos. And yet...it's been bounced to February 6, 2009. Maybe that one will stick.You gotta love the poster, though, which implies so many things.
