First Trailer & Poster for the 'Footloose' Reboot

Here's a quick test: Think of an old '80's movie not worth a second go-around in theaters, and invariably one of the first answers that comes to your mind should be Footloose.  Unfortunately, that same story of a small town that outlaws dancing of all things is headed to reboot land.

The updated Footloose comes from a capable director in Craig Brewer (Hustle & Flow, Black Snake Moan), who I'm stunned to see associated with this super cheesy, modern rendition of the original.

'Footloose' Remake Finally Makes Its Bacon

If you're still interested in the Footloose remake, first making the bold assumption that you were ever interested, then you'll be happy to learn the cast is finally set and Paramount will proceed as planned. Well, not exactly. It was supposed to open this spring, then later this month, and now April 1, 2011. But it's on track, anyway.

Zac Efron bounced out of this, then director Kenny Ortega caught a lifeboat. Chace Crawford couldn't fit the shooting schedule around marij...um...Gossip Girl, and then Craig Brewer came in to direct, on the condition he could also rewrite it, so there was some more lost time. But Paramount swears it's all a go now. Through a press release, the studio notes that Julianne Hough is still in the cast, Dennis Quaid will play her father, the John Lithgow character from the original. And the new Kevin Bacon is unheralded Kenny Wormald, seen on MTV's Dancelife, whatever that is. He's clearly got moves, though, having toured as a dancer of Justin Timberlake and the Pussycat Dolls. Of course, that's only half the battle, isn't it?

A Fan-Made 'Footloose' Remake Coming Soon

Once upon a time, a remake of Footloose was going to be in theaters this year. A strange chain of events that has left the film without a star has officially sidelined it, and it's on its second screenplay and director already. But Paramount really wants to cut loose, so maybe...2011?

In the meantime, Cinematical reports Our Footloose Remake is a scene-by-scene update of the 80s classic made by fans all over North America. You can find out more at the fan film's official site, which vows to "remake the crap out of this movie." Here's the story:

Chace Crawford Drops Out of Doomed 'Footloose'

Footloose is another project they should probably just shoot in the head. It's happening with alarming frequency these days, where a film loses so many key pieces or gets delayed and delayed (or in this case, both), and you just wonder why the studios don't just eat their losses instead of incurring new ones.

Back to Footloose: It was originally a Zac Efron vehicle, with his High School Musical director Kenny Ortega at the helm. Efron bounced about a year ago, and Chace Crawford stepped in. Then Michael Jackson died, so Ortega had to hurriedly finish his documentary, This Is It. After rushing to get that done, Ortega begged off the project and was replaced by Hustle & Flow's Craig Brewer, which is not exactly the same thing. He also re-wrote the script, which caused more delays, and now Chace Crawford has quit the film, as well. So, in roughly a year, the film has a new script, new star who wasn't nearly as big a star, a new director, and a delayed production and release schedule. Now they have to start over again.

Paramount Updates Status for 'True Grit,' 'Footloose'

Less than 24 hours ago, we told you that Paramount was releasing Paranormal Activity 2 on October 22nd, where it will not only square off against Saw VII, but also two major productions as well, Prisoners with Hugh Jackman and the comic book adaptation, Red, with Bruce Willis and about a dozen other people.

There's more 2010 updates from Paramount, as the studio has picked December 25th for the Coen Brothers' remake of the old John Wayne western True Grit. That gives the brothers a chance at some awards, which is pretty typical, but I don't recall them ever having a December release before. Let's check...Oh, there's one: O Brother, Where Art Thou? That turned out pretty well, didn't it? Although the central role - that of a teenage girl - has yet to be cast, the Coens do have Josh Brolin, Matt Damon, and Jeff Bridges, so there's plenty of reason to put a spotlight on this film.
