‘Sin City 2’ Back On Track for Spring Start

For all of you who have been waiting patiently for this sequel, like I have, it seems like there may be the proverbial light at the end of the tunnel.  At the recently concluded New York Comic-Con, Frank Miller sat down for an interview with MTV and among the subjects was the long delayed sequel to his popular Sin City film. “Robert Rodriquez and I are finishing up the script on Sin City right now and could be shooting as early as next spring”, he stated.

Zack Snyder On Board for '300' Prequel, 'Xerxes'

Did you actually think Zack Snyder wouldn't be back for the prequel to 300? He tells Hero Complex it's a go, confirming, "We closed the writing deal on Xerxes. We started writing about a week ago."

Now...there is a little wiggle room on all this. Snyder is co-writing with Kurt Johnstad, with whom he developed the first movie, and he'll also direct, but is he directing? Not yet. "It's really going to depend on what the studio wants to do and what we do when we finish; I don't have a directing deal in place but we are writing it, so call it intent," Snyder said. "If there was a crime they could probably convict me." Frank Miller finally wrapped up the graphic novel component of Xerxes earlier this year, and that might have been too long, not that it necessarily could have been avoided. Still, assuming the film gets started in six to nine months, we're still nearly two years away from it, or an astounding five years from the release of 300. Could he have not made The Spirit? Well, just for its own purposes, yes. But you can't blame a guy for striking while the iron's hot.

First Look at Frank Miller's '300' Prequel, 'Xerxes'

Frank Miller's first order of business related to another 300 movie was to come up with the graphic novel, which presumably, Zack Snyder would also direct. Rather than going forward with the stories of the Spartans, or moving backward to see where they had come from (with no Gerard Butler, more than likely), Miller has gone a completely different route: Xerxes.

Miller tells The Los Angeles Times that the prequel focusing on The Big X begins a decade before the events in 300, and while it might have a similar appearance to the movie that kicked off the latest (mostly underwhelming) trend in sword n' sandals movies, the nature of the story is completely different.

"[It] starts with the Battle of Marathon. The lead character is Themistocles, who became warlord of Greece and built their navy. The story is very different than 300 in that it involves Xerxes' search for godhood. The existence of gods are presupposed in this story and the idea is that he's well on his way to godhood by the end of the story."

Frank Miller Has a Title and Story for '300' Prequel

Are you ready for the inevitable 300 follow-up? The most recent information we received pointed to a prequel rather than a sequel, and if they've gotta do it, that's the easiest way to go. Now Frank Miller says he's finished writing a sequel instead and will now begin the artwork for the graphic novel.

Empire reports that Miller is using the working title Xerxes, which is a pretty big indication that the wost part of 300 is back. Man, that whole Xerxes business in the first movie just didn't do it for me. Miller says the story is "The battle of Marathon through my lens," which is another big clue, because that puts the action about ten years before the events of 300, and since the battle in the new story gave rise to the legend of the marathon runner who ran about 140 miles from Marathon to Sparta seeking Gerard Butler's help. He then ran 25 miles back and dropped dead of a heart attack, or that's what the legend says.

Another "We'll Shoot 'Sin City 2' Next Year" Story

Once again, I'll believe it when I see it, but there's more talk that Sin City 2 will film this year. But there are a couple new wrinkles this time. Mania reports that producer Stephen L'Heureux outlines a production start sometime in the second half of 2010, but it won't be based on any of Frank Miller's comics.

Instead, the script will be completely original, and Milller will again co-direct with Robert Rodriguez. That's not a surprise. But why the new script? Hadn't Miller already spent years developing the sequel using his graphic novel series as inspiration? If not, that helps explain part of the delay. Miller has since moved on to working on a screenplay for his Dark Horse comic Hard Boiled, according to L'Heureux.
