Trailer - George A. Romero's 'Survival of the Dead'

There's still zombie left in George A. Romero. Even though more than 40 years have passed since Night of the Living Dead, which truly was a revolution, Romero still sees life in the undead, and his latest film, Survival of the Dead, will be released on May 28th.

Romero's place in the horror movie realm is more than secure. In addition to more or less making the zombie movie mainstream, his work has been remade, and perhaps tellingly, both Dawn of the Dead and The Crazies were pretty good. And I suppose there's something to be said for sticking with what you know; this is Romero's sixth ...of the Dead movie, each modifying slightly what's been done before. Here's a new trailer for Survival of the Dead, which transports the action to an island, where it's thought the zombies can't possibly reach the uninfected. But where would the fun be in that?

A Trio of New Character Posters for 'The Crazies'

Not much to say about it, but there are three new character posters from The Crazies, the Dawn of the Dead-styled remake of George Romero's 1973 low-budget flick about a small town that gets overrun by a manmade virus. The posters arrived at Apple Trailers last night, and if you click on any of them, they magically get real big like.

Second Poster for the Romero Remake 'The Crazies'

It could be just me, but The Crazies looks like it might be a pretty good 90 minutes of sci-fi/horror paranoia - scihorronoia, if you will. The trailers have worked, the first poster was good enough, and here's the new one Overture just sent over this morning. Click to see the whole enchilada.

There are, of course, plenty of reasons to remain skeptical. First, most movies just aren't that good. We often overlook that. Beyond that, most remakes just aren't that good, as our readers often remind us. Director Breck Eisner has to prove himself here, because Sahara isn't something to hang your hat on. That is a lot to overcome, and we need to throw in there that trailers and posters are supposed to be convincing; their only job is to sell tickets, whether the actual movie is good or not.

Second Trailer for the Remake of Romero's 'Crazies'

Back in the early 1970s, director George Romero made a flick called The Crazies. Probably due to his reputation as one of the icons of low-budget scare 'ems, a mostly OK but not fantastic movie has secured a place in the director's legacy. It's fine, but not one of his best.

The remake, coming out early next year, follows a similar patter used by the 2005 version of Dawn of the Dead. If it works out that well, then the film is an unqualified success. It's off to a good start, because Timothy Olyphant and Radha Mitchell are worth having in your horror movie. And the first trailer had a few surprisingly intense moment. I say surprising because I trust director Breck Eisner about as far as I can thrown my car. Now there's a second trailer, which premiered on Friday at Yahoo!, and they're two-for-two. It might not blow you away or anything, especially if you saw the first trailer, but I'm not disappointed yet.
