Golden Globe Winners

The 68th annual Golden Globes are wrapped up, and the winners announced. As these include both movie and television categories, I'll post all the winners, but focus my commentary on the movie awards.

 

Our big contenders for the awards were The King's Speech, The Social Network, and The Fighter. The King's Speech was nominated for 7 awards, and The Social Network and The Fighter each nominated for 6. But this year, I'm torn; looking at the list on nominees, I felt that just about all of them were deserving. Except the nominations for The Tourist. Had they even seen that movie? I mean, come on, the only way it could be nominated for a Best Comedy is due to how laughably *bad* it was. Had to get that off my chest, I do feel better. I'm more fired up about that than I am the True Grit snub.

2011 Golden Globes Nominations Announced

The Golden Globes sometimes give us a hint of what's to come when the Oscars roll around, and sometimes they don't, but they're interesting in their own right. The nominations for the 68th iteration of these awards have just been announced, and while there are few surprises, there's plenty to get us talking.

Ricky Gervais Hosting the Golden Globes in 2011

I thought Ricky Gervais was a bad fit for the Golden Globes. Don't get me wrong, I thought it was hilarious, but it just didn't seem to match the mood of the evening. A bit snarky, maybe, and some people in the room probably didn't appreciate being the target of his jokes.

Well...he's back. The Hollywood Foreign Press Association revealed on Wednesday that Gervais would host again in January 2011. The timing of the announcement, which is not really connected to anything, tells you all you need to know: Gervais was hired to host this year's awards in October, so clearly, the producers are thrilled to work with him again. Maybe they're envisioning a kind of Billy-Crystal-at-the-Oscars thing developing.

'Avatar' Wins Best Picture, Director at Golden Globes

You won't believe this, but I almost picked Robert Downey, Jr. to win Best Actor in a musical or comedy at The Golden Globes, and if I had, I also would've picked him for Best Speech. So that would've been two more wins. As it is, I picked Matt Damon and lost. That was the theme for the evening for my Globes picks; how did you do?

I figured the Avatar thing, and yes, my Hangover pick seems inspired now, but Sandra Bullock pulled a slight upset, and now might be the favorite in Best Actress for the Oscars. Who knew? I thought the Globes would give The Hurt Locker something, but alas, the voters were consistent with their Avatar love. James Cameron also gave a great speech, by the way. Here are the winners from tonight's show, and remember, as much as people might say they're the first true indicator of the Oscars, that's not true. Sometimes they're on target, sometimes they're not.

The Big Picture's Golden Globe Predictions

The Golden Globes are Sunday night, and it may or may not provide a road map for the Oscars. This year more than others, the awards season is worth watching. That's because so many things still seem to be up in the air, pardon the pun. Best Picture favorites have changed a couple times, there's no consensus on the lead acting categories, and Best Director provides a lot of intrigue, as well.

The ballots were all due this past Wednesday, so even though the nominations were announced before Avatar was released, there was plenty of time for the Hollywood Foreign Press to see it if they happened to miss it during the press screenings. But will they love it more than American film critics, who this weekend named The Hurt Locker Best Picture and awarded Best Director to Kathryn Bigelow? I think they will, and a look at the past decade reveals that the HFPA sings its own tune, with only three Best Pictures going on to win the Oscar. The Best Actress category is also one to keep your eye on. Meryl Streep is in the comedy subset for Julie & Julia, and Carey Mulligan should win for An Education among dramatic performances. But Sandra Bullock just tied Streep in the Critics Choice awards, and she's in Mulligan's field. Can she pull off the upset? Our winners are in bold.
