'Green Lantern 2' Already Being Planned, But Will it Get Made?

Many people tend to think that just because a movie is being planned, it means they have the green light or are on some sort of a fast track.  In fact, I've read various news organizations say that Green Latern 2 is already on a fast track.  I completely disagree.  The "planning" portion of the film doesn't cost much money.  Talking to the writer to see what ideas he has, whether the original cast is interested in a sequel, and planning a budget to make a profit is exploratory planning at best.  It doesn't surprise me that executives at Warner say that they stand firmly behind the franchise and are already hard at work planning a sequel.  What did you expect them to say?

New poster for Green Lantern

I don't know about you, but I've been rather underwhelmed with all things Green Lantern.  This new poster doesn't do much to improve that outlook.  I want this movie to do well.  In my opinion Ryan Reynolds should be a huge star and this movie's success would help him down that path.  As a fan of comic book movies I'm rooting for it, but my spidey sense (I know wrong hero) is telling me that this thing is going to stink.

'Green Lantern' Trailer & Marketing Delayed Due to Massive Amount of Effects, Full Trailer Attached to 'Thor'

Ryan Reynolds' spin as Green Lantern hits theaters in a little over two months.  June 17.  Seriously, like 10 weeks from now.  And, in the wealth of trailers and promo material from this summer's other blockbuster films, I had completely forgotten about it. If it weren't for Warner Brothers' new President Jeff Robinov giving his State of the Comic Book Film Union to the LA Times this week in which he spoke candidly about Green Lantern, this release may have slipped my mind all together (okay, maybe not all together, but you get the point).

Can you blame me though?  Other than the lackluster teaser trailer we got back in November, we haven't seen anything for this film.  ANYTHING.  And, in his interview with the LA Times, Robinov addressed this claiming that we haven't seen any marketing material for Green Lantern because the intricate special effects scenes are taking longer to complete than originally anticipated.  Uh oh.  On the brightside though, the new studio head said we'll be getting a full trailer attached to the May 6 release of Marvel's Thor.

But, is it too late to salvage Green Lantern's release?

WB President Wants 'Justice League' Movie for 2013, Plans for Batman After 'The Dark Knight Rises'

Oh what a regime change at a studio can do...  Last night, the interweb was a grumblin' after an LA Times article on new Warner Bros. President Jeff Robinov made a passing comment about having a Justice League movie in theaters by 2013.  And when I say passing, I do mean passing - nothing other than a title and year were mentioned.  Now today, in a follow up piece to the article posted yesterday, the LA Times and Robinov directly addressed the studio's plan for the superhero team-up.

But that's not all.  While discussing the course of the studio's various hero franchises, Robinov confirmed that The Dark Knight Rises is in fact the endpoint of Batman’s story as it currently exists on film, wrapping Christopher Nolan's trilogy.  But more surprisingly, he and the studio plan to reboot the character immediately afterward.

Nathan Fillion Finally Cast as Next 'Green Lantern'

Last year when director Martin Campbell and Warner Bros. were looking for someone to take up the mantle of Green Lantern there was an uproar from the online community that geek god Nathan Fillion land the role.  There was even a fan made trailer which showed off the Castle and Firefly star in all his superhero glory (which I've enclosed below).  If you can't remember that far back, it was very similar to what happened this year with Fillion and Uncharted.  Apparently the actor can and should play everyone.

Ultimately the role of Hal Jordan, aka the Green Lantern of Space Sector 2814, went to Ryan Reynolds.  But the uproar was too much for the studio to ignore and Fillion has officially been cast as the Green Lantern.
