Hulu And Miramax Sitting In A Tree...

Yesterday I got home from work and sat down to watch, Solitary, the one reality show that doesn't make me want to vomit, and I don't mind watching (It really is quite fun.  No alliances.  No scheming.  Just good ol' fashioned mind over matter, and the same lame quality participants save a few), but I digress, so, I sat down and browsed to Hulu, for those of you who have turned away from traditional cable and do your viewing online this is probably a staple in your viewing diet, and the first thing I see is a huge promo for Miramax.

Watch 'Dr. Strangelove' on Hulu

In a discussion about Tyler Perry's remaking of Rear Window, I mentioned that Hitchcock's 1950s classic is my favorite film, but that I don't have an all-time top ten or anything. I do know some films that would always be in the running, though, and one of them is definitely Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb.

Quite possibly the greatest political satire off all time, Stanley Kubrick's Cold War dark comedy was released a little over a year after the Cuban Missile Crisis, and only two months after the Kennedy assassination, so clearly, global tensions were running high. The film went on to be nominated for four Academy Awards, losing three of the four to the clearly inferior My Fair Lady. Bad year for the Oscars: In addition to Peter Sellers creating three characters better than Rex Harrison's award-winning Henry Higgins, Beckett, Zorba the Greek, and Mary Poppins were all runners-up for Best Picture. Be that as it may, Strangelove is the most resonant and important film from 1964, and now you can watch it on Hulu. So do that.

Hulu May Remain Free After All

Updating a story we've written about a couple times since earlier this year, Hulu has no plans to charge you for its content. That's according to a source for Entertainment Weekly who says that if any content requires your cash, it will be on top of the freebies Hulu already offers.

Now, I will caution you that the magazine doesn't name its source and that it was just a week ago that News Corp. deputy chair Chase Carey said charges would begin in 2010. Then again, as Entertainment Weekly points out, Rupert Murdoch's corporate culture talks a lot and sometimes doesn't back it up. So maybe they're just marching to the beat of a theoretical drummer on this issue.

Hulu to Charge Viewers for Broadcast Content in 2010

Say goodbye to freebies on Hulu. News Corp. Deputy Chairman Chase Carey told those in attendance at the Broadcasting & Cable OnScreen Summit, "It's time to start getting paid for broadcast content online." This isn't a new stance; News Corp. said earlier this year it would eventually find a financial model for Hulu that turned substantial profits, but we didn't know then that it meant next year.

“I think a free model is a very difficult way to capture the value of our content," he continued. "I think what we need to do is deliver that content to consumers in a way where they will appreciate the value. “Hulu concurs with that; it needs to evolve to have a meaningful subscription model as part of its business," added Carey.
