"It's not easy being Indie" is a new column which will follow the successes and failures of films with a tiny budget but a great scope. This week, it's not easy being Kenton Bartlett or any other of the 588 crew members who volunteered to create Missing Pieces.

As I flipped through the results of the Los Angeles Film Festival and looked up the winners of the various categories I stumbled upon a familiar name. Joe Cornish's Attack the Block received the Audience Award for Best Narrative Feature. Congratulations to Mr. Cornish.
Sunday, October 31, 2010 at 11:04PM In 2005, there was a film called In Memorium which was produced on a microscopic budget using the found-footage technique that Paranormal Activity is known for. Of course a horror film using this technique isn't anything new, but couple that with a similar plot where a couple installs motion sensitive video cameras in their home and captures a "paranormal activity" and you basically get the exact same movie.
Except this movie was developed by Amanda Gusack and was actually shown couple years ago before PA but was shelved after not being able to find a buyer. Now, with the success of PA, the filmmakers are releasing the film on IndieFlix.com.
As a big fan of PA, I was skeptical at first, but after checking out the first 18 minutes of the film, I'm intrigued but the acting needs work - seems too scripted. Also, with the fixed cameras it is more similar to PA2.

If Kaleidoscopes could talk- (and sing)- they’d be the offbeat and quirky tragicomedy, Memories of Matsuko. This swiftly paced, jump-cutting musical film seems in, the first few scenes, like a head-long dive through the mind of an emotionally detached, music-video addicted adolescent. Instead, the film elicits torn feelings of contempt, irritation and wonder as it arrives, singing and dancing, at the core of tragedy, and all the blood spattered, rainbow-hued redemption therein. The Japanese film is based on a the novel of the same name by Muneki Yamada . Worth watching, Memories of Matsuko induces a kind of critical bi-polar state as it shifts between styles, genres and points of view.
