New Images from the Sundance Drama, 'The Informers'

One of the more anticipated movies coming up at Sundance this month is The Informers, an adaptation of the Bret Easton Ellis novel, which of course, means this is going to be the hap-hap-happiest movie on Earth.

It's an ensemble piece that stars Billy Bob Thornton, Kim Basinger, Winona Ryder, Mickey Rourke, the lovely Amber Heard, and the late Brad Renfro in what is unfortunately his last movie. The Informers is set against a backdrop of the go-go 1980s in Los Angeles. I'm betting there's more cocaine here than in Michael Irvin's car. The Not-So-Uplifting Trailer for Bret Easton Ellis' 'The Informers'

Well this one looks fun. Of course, it is a Bret Easton Ellis adaptation, and nobody can put a smile on your face like that guy.Actually, this trailer makes the world of The Informers look really screwed up, not that that's always a bad thing as a moviegoer. The tagline pretty much says it all: Greed is good. Sex is easy. Youth is forever. The movie explores the downside to the go-go 1980s, tackling infidelity, addiction, and other lighthearted subjects with a great cast that includes Billy Bob Thornton, Kim Basinger, Winona Ryder, new It-Girl Amber Heard, and Mickey Rourke, and it also marks the final performance of Brad Renfro, which makes the whole dark affair a little more bleak. Still, this could be incredible if Australian director Gregor Jordan handles the storylines carefully. His career is spotty, however. I liked Buffalo Soldiers but didn't care for his Ned Kelly remake. That's not much to go on, I realize, but that's all I've got.The thing about Ellis is his books give you so much to work with as a director, most of it admittedly nihilistic, that you should always have a handful of redeeming scenes even if the project as a whole doesn't take flight. This is a three-minute long Red Band trailer for The Informers, which doesn't have an opening date yet, but we believe it's coming out later this year. From the looks of it, it could be a turnaround role for Winona Ryder (let's hope), and it should further cement Billy Bob Thornton as one of the best, most reliable, and most versatile actors of his generation.
