New Writer for New Jack Ryan Film

The Jack Ryan franchise, based on the novels by Tom Clancy, is set to be reboot yet again, this time with Chris Pine as the hero. The character has previously been played by, in chronological order, Alec Baldwin (The Hunt for Red October), Harrison Ford (Patriot Games and Clear and Present Danger), and Ben Affleck (The Sum of All Fears).

The Star Trek star, who can also be seen alongside Denzel Washington in the upcoming Tony Scott film Unstoppable, has been attached to the Jack Ryan character for over a year now, JoBlo reports. The hiring of a new writer for the project seems to be a pretty good sign that it'll be moving forward.

'Lost' Director Jack Bender Rebooting Jack Ryan?

Here's another major film going to a director that is, at least, something of a surprise. New York Magazine reports that Jack Bender is a "cat's breath" away from directing Moscow, the reboot of that sturdy hero, Jack Ryan.

Who's Jack Bender? A Bad Robot devotee of J.J. Abrams who directed Child's Play 3...and that's his most recent film credit. However, through his work with Abrams, Bender has become both a producer and a more than qualified TV director, making, among other Lost episodes, six in the last season, including the series finale. Also: 11 episodes of Eight is Enough.

New Jack Ryan Flick, 'Moscow,' To Shoot Soon

Remember when Chris Pine was in the running for everything after Star Trek and the role he settled on was a Jack Ryan reboot? Well, it's been dormant for several months, but producers Lorenzo di Bonaventura tells Collider the movie is shooting pretty soon, which means it might get to theaters a couple years from now.

One thing that's different is that Moscow, as the reboot is tentatively called, isn't based on a Tom Clancy book, but rather an earlier unproduced screenplay by Hossein Amini, who co-wrote the Ryan-ed up version with Adam Cozad. That script was called Dubai, and some of the events have been changed to reflect a younger Jack Ryan right out of the Marine Corps, working as a financial consultant for a Russian billionaire when he finds himself wrapped up in a terrorist plot. According to di Bonaventura, the retooling of the screenplay went swimmingly. "We have a very good script," the producer reports. I think it’s...I’m very happy with where we are today and we’re looking forward to...maybe with a little luck starting next late winter/early spring."

Chris Pine's Jack Ryan Movie To Be Called 'Moscow'

Chris Pine, as you may remember, is not just Captain Kirk, but Jack Ryan, as well. Oh yes, Paramount is squarely in the Chris Pine business these days. But what will that Jack Ryan movie resemble? We already knew it wasn't based on anything Tom Clancy ever wrote, but is more of an origin story, although not exactly.

Pajiba's well-placed insider reveals that the new movie will "pick him up while he's on Wall Street." Fans of the novels probably could have guessed that, because references to Ryan's work in the private sector aren't impossible to find. But you probably wouldn't know that Ryan will do his financial analyst work in Russia, because that's not in the Clancy books anywhere.

The Next Jack Ryan Movie Won't Be an Origin Story

Before now, all we really knew about the next Jack Ryan film is that Chris Pine (Star Trek) would be taking up the role, picking up where Ben Affleck left off in 2002. But producer Mace Neufeld answered questions about the project during a press conference for Invictus, and Coming Soon got the skinny on Jack Ryan.

The most important element that came to light was that this won't be based on a previously published Tom Clancy work but rather an original screenplay. And yes, the effort is being made to give the franchise new life (and a longer life) by grabbing a young star to play Ryan, but this won't be an origin story. "We pick him up when he's on Wall Street," says Neufeld, "The Jack Ryan movies have never been action films. They're kind of 'thinking man's thrillers,'" the producer contends. "Jack is referred to as a 'water-walker' because of his ability to jump ahead to conclusions. That's very big in all the Jack Ryan films and that's how we want to portray him. He's a teacher. He's a historian. He's a linguist. And he's really smart."
