'Top Gun 2' Inches Toward Production with Tony Scott as the Director

About two weeks ago, we mentioned that award winning screenwriter Christopher McQuarrie (Usual Suspects) was going to write Top Gun 2 and that they had offers out to Jerry Bruckheimer to produce and Tony Scott to direct.  Well, there's news from WhatsPlaying.com.au that at a press junket for Unstoppable, Scott confirmed to have accepted the offer to direct Top Gun 2.

Now there's half of you that probably hate the idea of a Top Gun sequel because Hollywood usually fails at making the sequel better than the original (and in this case, its damn near impossible), but like it or not, this film is going to get made.

Paramount Feels the Need, the Need for 'Top Gun 2'!

Christopher McQuarrie, Oscar-winning screenwriter of The Usual Suspects, is working on an idea.  An idea that could forever change the landscape of modern cinema as we know it.  An idea so simple, yet so complex.  An idea that some of us have been waiting (literally*) our entire lives for...  An idea that goes by the name of Top Gun 2.

'Pirates 4' Wraps Production in Hawaii

That seemed faster than it was: Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides has wrapped its production in the Aloha State, according to Hawaii Magazine. What began on June 14th on the coast of Kauai wrapped less than two months later.

However, ther might still be a couple things left to shoot in Southern California, and producer Jerry Bruckheimer said earlier this summer that the slimmed-down Pirates 4 would shoot for 90 - 95 days total, down by nearly two months from At World's End. So there's still time within that schedule to find more things to put in front of Rob Marshall's 3-D cameras.

Watch Two New 'Sorcerer's Apprentice' Featurettes

Who wants popcorn? I have high hopes that Jerry Bruckheimer, who used to do better popcorn than Jiffy Pop, is on point with The Sorcerer's Apprentice, a modernized, live-action, mouse-free spin on one of the most famous animated sequences off all time. But lately, whether it's massive budgets or a loss of the Midas touch, Bruckheimer's movies haven't delivered the goods.

There's nothing wrong with a movie being entertaining for two hours and then you get out of the seat and resume your day. I liked the first National Treasure because that's exactly what it was, but the sequel was bad, and most of Jerry's films since the first Pirates have been, too. I mean, honestly, when the counterargument is, "Well, Deja Vu's pretty solid," you know Bruck's not exactly on a hot streak. And the reason I hope this is good popcorn is because, when the rubber meets the road, it should be: Good vs. evil clearly defined, splashy effects, a bit of comedy, Alfred Effing Molina...how can you screw this up? Two ways, really, the first being too much money and the second being Nicolas Cage. Just looking at the track record there. Here are two new featurettes that reinforce how much fun this movie could be. But will it be?

Disney Dismisses Bruckheimer's 'Killing Rommel'

While it's not exactly a reason to sound the fire alarm, Jerry Bruckheimer's adaptation of Killing Rommel has been officially dumped by Disney, according to Beyond Hollywood.

The one reason you might think Disney is reticent is the $200 million it spent on making Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, pushing it back a year, and then watching it completely stiff in the US. Internationally, it's fared better, but it is probably the big bomb of the summer season so far. That or Robin Hood, depending on marketing expenses and distribution costs. But apparently, that has nothing to do with it. Bruck has made films at Disney for ages and not all of them have been massive. Plus, he's still got The Sorcerer's Apprentice this summer (and I don't see the studio shrinking its efforts on that one) and next year's Pirates appendage, so it's not a case of Disney, in effect, canceling Bruckheimer's carte blanche.
