Josh Hartnett Will Wait Until 'Tomorrow'

I don't know that I expected great things out of Josh Hartnett when his career began, but he showed some signs of being a far more interesting actor than Pearl Harbor would indicate. (Check out O or Lucky Number Slevin.) But I did expect his career to be more top-of-mind, especially after he established himself.

His last wide release was 30 Days of Night and before that, look at this mess: The Black Dahlia, Hollywood Homicide, and Wicker Park. The best movie of the bunch during this time is 40 Days and 40 Nights. Yep. Now, I'm discounting his walk-on in Sin City and the movies that barely made it to theaters, but that's precisely the point.

More Images from Hartnett's 'I Come With the Rain'

Although most of the talk this week has been about the Toronto Film Festival, there are events going on all over the world this fall, including next month's Pusan Film Festival in Soeul, which is one of Asia's biggest film events every year. It's also where the film I Come With the Rain is headlining, and where it will be released in October.

The film stars Josh Hartnett as a Los Angeles-based detective who travels to Hong Kong to investigate the disappearance of the heir to a massive fortune. While on the case, he becomes haunted by visions of the killer he let get away back at home. So it's kind of a paranormal/psychological thrilla with the tortured cop angle. With an international flair. Earlier this summer, we brought you a whopping 21 new images from I Come With the Rain, and now here are nine more (ten counting the poster above). Give 'em the once over; I think it has kind of a cool look, and I hope we get to see it in the states sooner than later.

Josh Hartnett a Post-Apocalyptic 'Gunslinger'

It appeared for a couple years there that Josh Hartnett would be a really, really big star, but he developed this penchant for taking - gasp! - leading roles in smaller, more peculiar movies instead of enormous blockbusters. Whether or not the blockbuster door remained open to him I can't say for sure, but he's a good enough actor that it should be.

Variety says Hartnett will tackle the starring role in Gunslinger with Blood: The Last Vampire director Chris Nahon. Again, this is going to be one of those off-center projects set in the post-apocalyptic world. Boy, am I getting tired of the post-apocalypse. Perhaps it's time to ramp up the first post-post-apocalypse movie where everybody starts rebuilding.

Twenty-One New Images from 'I Come With the Rain'

Special thanks to Brian Jones for sending along almost two dozen new pictures from the cop thrilla, I Come With the Rain.

We showed you a poster for the film last month and wondered why a flick with Josh Hartnett, an impressive international cast (including Byung-hun Lee), and decent financial support wouldn't target the American market. In fact, as of this writing, it's only scheduled for releases in France, Japan, and Russia. There's kind of a supernatural noir component here: A cop from Los Angeles travels to Hong Kong to help search for the missing son of a billionaire. Poster - Josh Hartnett's 'I Come With the Rain'

So what's the deal on I Come With the Rain? The Josh Hartnett action thrilla with a good international cast, solid backing by the likes of StudioCanal, and maybe even a score by Radiohead should be one of those movies we're talking more about. But either distributors in the U.S. aren't interested or the production companies are seeing how it fares overseas, where it probably has a better shot at commercial success.

It begins as a fairly straightlaced detective movie, with retired cop Hartnett traveling to Hong Kong to search for a missing son of a billionaire. But he becomes haunted by memories from his own past and the case of a serial killer that forced Hartnett to leave the force in the first place. I hope we do get to see it sooner than later. It might pop up at Toronto in September, but the film is already going to be finishing its run in Japan and a few other international markets by then, so maybe it will get fast-tracked into the post-Labor Day U.S. bargain bin.
