'Magneto' Movie Demagnetized

This happened a few days ago, but maybe you hadn't heard: The Magneto origin story is not happening, at least not in the form we thought for a couple of years. The culprit, in addition to several months of atrophy, appears to be X-Men Origins: First Class.

Earlier this month, director Bryan Singer announced that he's taking the reins on that project, which is essentially the birth of the X-Men. Part of that story involves the younger Magneto, too, Erik Lehnsherr, because of his relationship with Charles Xavier. And as if that connection wasn't enough to kill the project, Singer told The Hollywood Reporter that Origins will strip Magneto for parts. "This story would probably utilize some of the Magneto story because it deals with a young Magneto, so it might supersede that because this would explore that relationship between a young energetic professor and a disenfranchised victim of the Holocaust," Singer said.

Ian McKellen Updates 'The Hobbit' Yet Again

Sir Ian McKellen loves to talk The Hobbit and Magneto. He recently gave Empire updates about both, although he says he doesn't have much of an idea about what's happening with Magneto. "The most I could hope for would be to top and tail that," McKellen says, meaning appearning only at the beginning and the end of the film, which is being packaged as an origin story.

The Hobbit, however, is a different story, and Sir Ian goes into great detail about the expectations there. Andy Serkis, he says, is the only other actor from the Lord of the Rings trilogy involved at the moment. Empire believes Hugo Weaving would almost have to return as Elrond, though it hasn't been made official. Here's more from the great Mr. McKellen:

David Goyer Says 'Magneto' Still Happening Someday

David S. Goyer is still high on an X-Men Origins: Magneto spin-off. The writer of comic properties for both DC and Marvel - as well as his own, les satisfying thrillers - has been linked to a movie about Magneto for a while, but he's worked on other projects like The Unborn and ABC's new Flash Forward, but that doesn't mean he can't find time for Professor X's arch rival.

"They're still thinking about doing it. They're definitely looking into doing other X-Men spinoffs," Goyer tells MTV of Marvel's plans. "I've been in touch with them. I'm sure that project will move forward in the next year or so." But it's not just Goyer who's busy with other projects (including, possibly, that third Batman< movie); Marvel is developing scads of these X-Men spin-offs, including Deadpool, X-Men: First Class, and Wolverine 2. And that's just the X-Men franchise, and just the ones already being planned. But Goyer might be the right guy for a Magneto movie, which, of course, would be an origin story, meaning no Ian McKellen, unless they bake in some flashbacks.

Bryan Singer Might Return to Comic Book Movies

Bryan Singer has directed comic book movies for both DC and Marvel, but it sounds like, if he was given a choice, he'd want to work for Marvel again, particularly the X-Men franchise.

Discussing the DVD release of Valkyrie with Total Film (via The Geek Files), Singer was reticent to even talk hypothetically about another Superman movie, but X-Men is a different story. "I'm eternally intertwined with X-Men now," Singer admits. "What takes an audience four hours to watch - the first two movies - took six years of my life. So, to not be part of it...It's a shame." But hope springs eternal: Singer is not opposed to helming the X-Men Origins: Magneto prequel, although that's really David Goyer's baby. Says the director of the first two X-Men movies, "The only thing that concerns me about Magneto is that if the prequel were to follow the track I used in X-Men, which is Magneto's history in the concentration camp, then I've lived in that world."
