Tom Selleck in the Dark About 'Magnum' Movie

Last night, Tom Selleck's TV movie, Jesse Stone: Thin Ice was the most watch program on network TV, grabbing about 15 million viewers. That's not bad at all, coming in at about half of what American Idol puts up week after week. So clearly, people still love Tom Selleck.

As a guest last week on Live with Regis and Kelly, (only it was Anderson Cooper and Kelly), and Selleck was asked about the possible Magnum, P.I. movie that has been bandied about for years. Would Selleck play Magnum, would he do a cameo, and would he have any involvement at all is the natural progression of the line of questioning. "They haven't called, they haven't written," he said. "I keep hearing they're developing one but I don't know whether I'm going to be in it... but they keep doing (fan) polls, and I keep winning them."

Matthew McConaughey Not Playing 'Magnum, P.I.'

Do people still have lucky stars? If so, they ought to thank them for this little item, which we lifted from MTV. Among the many rumors that got some play this year was that Matthew McConaughey was on the short list to play Thomas Magnum in the Magnum, P.I. movie. That, apparently, will not happen. Producer Brian Grazer was asked that question specifically and said, "No. I think the idea for Magnum P.I. is to find a counterpoint, to not try and find the new Tom Selleck but to find someone that is just so different that you go, 'Oh my God! That guy is Magnum?!?'"There is a script, apparently, but as Grazer revealed, "It's so much about casting. You have to find the actor that adds, through his own personality, something to the title." I wish I knew what kind of script it was, because that would dictate who might be a good fit. If it were an action movie with flourishes of comedy, you might go for someone other than you would if it were kind of a tongue-in-cheek approach.Honestly, I think the best choice is Tom Selleck. He looks better at 63 than Harrison Ford does at 66, and people bought plenty of Indiana Jones tickets. Plus, it would be cool to see where the character is now as opposed to pretending everything we know about Magnum never happened. I trust that's not what the script is about, but I guarantee you it would be a cooler movie than whatever spin-off/re-imagining they'll prop up.
