Amanda Seyfried Ready for 'Mamma Mia 2'

It probably wasn't an eventuality before last summer, but once Mamma Mia! became one of the highest-grossing movies in the world in 2008, a sequel seemed pretty hard to avoid. For months and months, reporters would ask breakthrough performer Amanda Seyfried about a follow-up, and she said she didn't know anything. Now she knows something.

"I've been talking to some insiders and it's not something that they haven't been working on," she tells the BBC's Newsbeat. "I don't actually know anything other than that." But again, that's more than we had heard before.

With the Golden Globes on the way this weekend, we thought we'd take a crack at predicting the winners. We're normally pretty good in that regard, but that doesn't take much or mean much.

Slumdog Millionaire Should Win: Slumdog Millionaire
Will Win: Slumdog Millionaire The momentum is not artificial. People genuinely seem affected by the film, and it's exceedingly well-made. In terms of its production, only Benjamin Button is more adventurous among the nominees, but despite being a great love story conceptually, it's not nearly the love story Slumdog is in practice, nor is anything at all in 2008 as life-affirming. Best Picture (Musical or Comedy):

Mamma Mia!
Vicky Cristina Barcelona Should Win: In Bruges
Will Win: In Bruges? I suppose Mamma Mia! would be a popular choice to win, but it's so clearly inferior to everything else in the category. We know Globes voters loved In Bruges, because it picked up three nominations, but Focus did zero to promote the film when it was out and isn't exactly bending over backwards for it now. The truth is, you could argue for everything in this category. I'm just picking an upset.

Superheroes, Animation Rule 2008 Box Office

As ridiculous as the box office numbers were for The Dark Knight, the 2008 box office will produce fewer $100 million earners than we saw in 2007. Overall, the year will be very near the the total box office for 2007; going into the final few days of the calendar, receipts are just under $100 million lower than they were last year. There were fewer tickets sold and fewer movies released.

But does that make 2008 a failure? No, even though some movies performed spectacularly poorly. After all, the movie industry made $2 billion more this year than it did in 2000. And since 2002, only one year has been under $9 billion in U.S. ticket sales, and that was 2005. So when you look at the $9.6 billion in gross revenue produced this year, you certainly won't feel sorry for Hollywood. Obviously, The Dark Knight was the story of the year. Only one other film has ever made over $460 million, and I personally think when you factor in the amount of competition this film faced and compare it to the five $50 million movies released in the six months after Titanic, the availability of illegal downloads, and the much faster turnaround to DVD in 2008 versus 1998, you can make the argument that this is the bigger achievement. The number ten film of the year, Horton Hears a Who!, earned just over $154 million between March and September, and The Dark Knight did that in three days. Oklahoma Critics Name Best - And Worst - of 2008

There are two reasons I'm passing along the Best of 2008 list from the fledgling Oklahoma Film Critics Circle. Point A: I'm from Oklahoma and that's where I'm spending the holidays this year. Point Other: They don't just name the best of the year, they also point out the worst of the year.

Most critics' organizations don't bother with the worst flicks of the year, some because they don't want to draw any undue attention to them and others because they're afraid of pissing off the studios. The Oklahoma critics seem to share my belief: It's not my fault I hated your awful movie. If you don't want me to point out how much your movie sucked, then you should have made a better film. So, good for them; they might be the only critics in the country that do this at the end of the year, outside of the Razzies, of course. And there's not much to complain about on their list or awards at all, which you can read in full bloom at Awards Daily.
