Chris Pine and Tom Hardy in McG's 'This Means War'

This Means War is a spy vs. spy action/romcom tagged as a film about Two CIA operatives wage an epic battle against one another after they both fall in love with the same woman.

This is the first I'm hearing of this potential instant-classic from the brilliant McG.  He has been producing quality entertainment since the debut of his 2002 creation Fastlane.  It was not my favorite show of all-time, but I did watch it, just because who doesn't want to watch T.A. Thiessen boss people around.

McG Producing Snow White? Don't Cry, There's Still Hope.

McG: making filmgoers twinge uncomfortably since 2000.

There's been a rumor for a few months that McG, the man who's been producing vapid TV shows and ruining Terminator for the past couple years, was interested in making an "edgy" version of Snow White for the big screen.

Now, the idea for a darker Snow White isn't a bad one by any means; take 1997's Snow White: A Tale Of Terror, for example.  It might have been made-for-TV, but it was hyper-violent and quite the opposite of our Disney-fueled perception of the story.  Can McG, of all people, make the same kind of changes, but on a grander scale?

Tom Hardy Replaces Worthington in 'This Means War'

If you saw Inception and asked yourself, "Who is that guy," that guy was probably Tom Hardy. He's the new Mad Max, too, which means we're about 30 years from hearing phone calls of him threatening his girlfriend and using racial slurs. Something to jot down for later. But Hardy has already impressed people with his work in Bronson and his stand-out performance in Inception is sure to lead to more roles.

Like, say, This Means War. Vulture reports that Hardy will replace Sam Worthington, who flirts with a lot more movies than he sees through, but I think I prefer Hardy, anyway, maybe just because he hasn't been overexposed. The film will pair him with McG, a prospect few of us would be crazy about, but it does co-star Reese Witherspoon and Chris Pine.

McG Still Thinking He'll Direct 'Terminator' Sequels

The one thing that stood out to me about McG's direction of Terminator Salvation was how little flare he showed when it came to the story. The look of the film was terrific, the action was great, he mined quality action movie performances out of Sam Worthington and Moon Bloodgood, but I didn't think there was anything connecting all of it together.

Even though he further derailed a franchise that needed an uptick after T3 and the fourth film essentially bankrupted its producers, McG believes he's still going to direct the fifth and sixth Terminator films. I'm sure the new owners of the franchise will have something to say about that, and the future of Terminator should become clear within a couple months. Still, McG participated in a BD-Live chat, providing commentary to a live stream of the film, and Gizmodo was there for the whole thing. Before Terminator Salvation was released, McG talked about his ideas for a fifth film, which were pretty cool, actually. But will he get the chance to make them a reality? Insert Sailing Pun Here: McG's 'Captain Nemo' Sinks

Another tough pill to swallow for McG, the director commonly blamed for the so-so performance of and the often caustic reaction to Terminator Salvation: His Captain Nemo: 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea has capsized.

Variety says that the film has been put on hold by Disney, less than three months before it was scheduled to go into production. And, what's more, McG is off the project for good. I didn't see that coming at all. This could all tie to Disney's other waterborne project, Pirates 4, which Nine director Rob Marshall confirmed recently he would be directing. Why that prospect bothers some people, I have no idea. But with The Black Pearl heading back on the water, almost certain to be a mammoth success (especially since The House of Mouse is committing less money to it to bring the series back down to Earth), a submerged McG flick may seem like a risk not worth taking, at least not in the same calendar year.
