Mel Gibson in Negotiations to Join Cast for Heist Flick 'Sleight of Hand'

I have no doubt that Mel Gibson will put his foot in his mouth again in the future and say something ridiculously inappropriate.  But until that snafu comes, it appears starring in The Beaver is only the beginning of Gibson's second chance in Tinsel Town. 

Variety reports, one of the new projects Gibson is eyeing is an upcoming comedy heist movie called Sleight of Hand, where he would join the likes of 24 star Kiefer Sutherland, Thomas Jane and Gerard Depardieu.  The robbery film will be written and directed by Brad Mirman who recently created the series The Confession, which stars Sutherland as an assassin in search of redemption in the world of good vs evil.

Trailer - First Look at Mel Gibson in 'The Beaver'

If you've been following the site, you already know about The Beaver, the Jodie Foster directed film in which she stars alongside Mel Gibson. (You can find a complete synopsis of the film here.) The Beaver has been in the can for a while now, but its release has been delayed because of Gibson's personal problems.

They are finally moving ahead with the release of the film and after the jump we have the official trailer, which gives us our first glimpse of Gibson and his beaver puppet. We also get to hear the puppet's voice, which sounds oddly like Michael Caine.

Mel Gibson Wins Even When he Loses

So what's the worst thing you can do to a disgraced actor who is hated by everyone in Hollywood?  Simple, have him make a cameo appearance in a highly anticipated film and then take it away from him by claiming that his actions have made the cast and crew uneasy working with him.  Or so you would think.

Dammit, I'm Mel Gibson, I can tell Jesus Christ what to do!

Turns out, when Mel Gibson lost out on his cameo appearance for Hangover 2, he actually won $750,000.

New Poster and Plot Synopsis for 'The Beaver'

Mel Gibson may have been booted from The Hangover 2, but he still has one film in the can - Jodie Foster's The Beaver. The film stars Gibson as a manic depressive who begins using a beaver puppet in order to cope with his problems.

While the film has no release date yet, Summit Entertainment released a new poster and detailed description of the film at American Film Market. Click on the image above for the full poster. Another 'The Hangover 2' Casting Update

With all this Mel Gibson/Liam Neeson news for The Hangover 2, I can't help but think it takes away from their "cameo" appearances. I always thought the purpose was to surprise us with a cameo, not make headlines. And now Mike Tyson is back, and somehow in Thailand the same time the rest of the characters are.
