Mike Myers Resurrects 'Austin Powers' For Another Sequel

Mike Myers must've grown tired of the scottish accent and the whole Shrek bit, and decided a blast from the past was just what the doctor (Evil) ordered.  Hitfix reported earlier this evening, Myers has signed on for another go-around with the groovy, shaggadelic International Man of Mystery know as Austin Powers for a fourth installment of the once popular series.

The movie will mark the first time we've seen the James Bond spoofed schtick since 2002, when Goldmember was in theaters.

Movie Review - 'Shrek Forever After'

Shrek Forever After Starring Mike Myers, Cameron Diaz, and Eddie Murphy Directed by Mike Mitchell Rated PG

A return to form is rare in movie franchises. Usually, if the first film is good, the second is simply bigger, targeting more money. And if there’s a third one, the odds are it’ll be even worse. Should a movie series extend to four entries, it’s typically a very lazy cash transaction. By then, all the good ideas have been drained, children of the main characters have been introduced in a vain attempt to breathe new life into the story, and there’s very little remaining of the charm from the original. That’s what is most surprising about Shrek Forever After (alternately called Shrek: The Final Chapter). Here’s a brand name that had very few artistic aims to begin with, got worse with each movie, and still DreamWorks decided to come back for a fourth attempt. Amazingly enough, Shrek Forever After is really entertaining and is easily the best installment since the first film. In addition to raising its game significantly over the lethargic Shrek the Third, this is the first Shrek in 3-D, and maybe for the first time during this widespread growth in animated movies presented with special glasses, the film actually benefits greatly from the technology. The quiet, normal life no longer suits Shrek (Mike Myers), who secretly longs to go back to the way things were, when being an ogre meant he was feared. Unfortunately, when he vents those feelings to his wife, Fiona (Cameron Diaz), “the way things were” means before he saved her from captivity in the first film. Following the squabble with his wife, Shrek comes upon Rumpelstiltskin (Walt Dohrn), who is the Far Far Away version of a predator lender: You make a deal that’s way too expensive for you and way too good for him. In return for spending one day as the ogre he used to be, Shrek gives up a day from his childhood, a day he doesn’t remember.

'Austin Powers' Franchise Not Over Yet

Is the prospect of a fourth Austin Powers movie at all appealing? Mike Myers hasn't been funny in a decade, although the last time he was funny was the second Austin flick. But more than that, Goldmember came out in 2002, and ten years is a long time for people to wait, especially if the previous movie in the series was that bad.

But a fourth movie may be exactly what we get. Director Jay Roach tells MTV that Myers is already working on ideas for the film, and that he'd jump right into the franchise again. "Mike gave me my first shot directing on Austin Powers 1. Just said, 'Hey, you should direct this movie,' when I hadn't directed much of anything. So I love that group of people and what could be better than going back into that."

Harrowing Updates on the Marvin the Martian Movie

As much as I love Marvin the Martian, I'm not sure he's worth a feature film. In much the same way SNL sketches don't transfer to the big screen because the characters are designed to work for five minutes at a time, not 90. So a secondary cartoon character, one whose glory days are about 50 years old, may not be able to carry film, or open one, for that matter, which might be more important to Warner Bros.

The Los Angeles Times - a popular daily newspaper in southern California, if I'm not mistaken - says that the film has writers, Paul Kaplan and Mark Torgove, who are also handling the script for a CHiPs movie, sure to have an Erik Estrada cameo. But the remake insanity doesn't end its connection to Marvin the Martian there. Hong Kong Phooey update director Alex Zamm has taken the reins on this film, too, and if you've heard of that guy, you're one up on me. Oh, I see that he's also directing Beverly Hills Chihuahua 2. Perfect.

The Razzies Love 'The Love Guru'

As everyone expected, The Love Guru and Paris Hilton were the big winners/losers at the Golden Raspberry Awards. The Razzies, of course, acknowledge the worst movies and performances of the year, and they're always announced the night before the Oscars.

Mike Myers' magnum opus picked up three awards, as did Hilton's The Hottie and The Nottie. Paris executed the rare double shot, earning Worst Actress and Worst Supporting Actress. In a strange way, it's her most notable achievement that doesn't involve jail. Uwe Boll finally won the Worst Career Achievement Razzie, and there was even room for Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.
