That 'Monopoly' Movie Is Still Out There Somewhere

I'm not entirely sure what "Probably 2012 [or 2013], somewhere in the future" means, because it doesn't sound like Hasbro CEO Brian Goldner is sure what it means, either. He knows what he's talking about, but doesn't seem to have a real grasp on where it's going.

The subject is the Monopoly movie. Ridley Scott's directing it, and at first, I thought it could be a really cool riches-to-rags story, especially given the economy. Then the screenwriter started talking about the plot...and it's bad. Basic Instinct 2 bad. It's since been handed off to Pamela Pettler (9 and Corpse Bride), which isn't fantastic news. But it's better, I guess. Goldner claims the script is not "all there yet." Anyway, Hasbro, which apparently thinks the board game trend has actually come into style since it's producing these off-shoots like they're going out of style, is still holding a place for the film down the line. The Uninteresting Plot for Ridley Scott's 'Monopoly'

So how exactly will Ridley Scott turn Monopoly into a board game? It's the world's most popular and frustrating form of communal entertainment (well, using fake money, anyway), but going around a square board and losing all your money doesn't sound like a natural movie idea.

Fortunately, we don't have to work that our on own because writer-producer Frank Beddor tells The Los Angeles Times how it's going to work. "I created a comedic, lovable loser who lives in Manhattan and works at a real estate company and he's not very good at his job but he's great at playing Monopoly." But wait...there's a whole lot more, and it's hardly A-list stuff:

Ridley Scott Passes Go, Collects More Than $200

He's been talking about it for about a year, and now Ridley Scott is officially on board for a movie version of Monopoly, Hasbro's classic board game of frothing greed. He'll produce and direct the flick for Universal, and The Hollywood Reporter says Monopoly will have "a futuristic sheen along the lines of his iconic Blade Runner.How will it all work? I have no idea. But I re-watched Clue a few months ago and was surprised how well it held together. Certainly, Monopoly doesn't have as well-formed a narrative as Clue, but you can imagine some Citizen Kane-type story with a guy amassing all this wealth, putting the screws to his rivals for years and years, and eventually getting his comeuppance and losing everything. I don't know if that's what they'll use, but it would make some sense. Pamela Pettler is writing the screenplay, and she has previously been a co-writer on Corpse Bride and Monster House. The futuristic turn is something I didn't really foresee; I would've thought it would start in the 1950s or 1960s and work its way up to a contemporary conclusion. Either way, I think there's something here, and I'll be curious to see what Scott and Pettler come up with.In other news, the guys over at Platinum Dunes, who are remaking all the horror movies, have a deal in place with Hasbro to make a movie based on Ouija, as if Witchboard didn't satisfy that urge.
