Paul Greengrass May Direct 'The Deep Blue Good-By' for Leonardo DiCaprio to Star in?

It's great to see Paul Greengrass linked to possibly directing another promising movie, especially since Universal recently pulled the rug out from under him regarding his plans to direct the Martin Luther King Jr. biopic Memphis.  While the director is on the hunt for financiers for Memphis, he's also said to be eyeing a new project called The Deep Blue Good-By with Leonardo DiCaprio attached to star, according to Deadline.

The Deep Blue Good-By will be adapted from the John D. MacDonald detective series that has been set up at 20th Century Fox with DiCaprio's production company Appian Way since September of 2009.

Paul Greengrass to Direct 'Memphis'

The director of Green Zone and the last two Bourne movies has decided to tackle Universal's upcoming drama Memphis.  Paul Greengrass wrote and will direct the film that centers around the events leading up to the 1968 assassination of Dr. Martin Luther Jr. in Memphis, Tenn, according to Deadline. 

Greengrass wrote the script based upon his own research of the events that took place on that tragic day in American history.  

Scott Rudin, who recently produced two Oscar nominated films in True Grit and The Social Network  will be the producer behind Memphis.  The cameras are expected to start rolling this summer, though no casting announcements have been made yet.

'The Bourne Legacy' Minus The Bourne?

Speculation about what a fourth film in the Bourne series would look like has been ongoing since June when it was announced Tony Gilroy would be penning the new sequel.  Speculation like would Paul Greengrass come back to direct after openly leaving the project in February?  Would Matt Damon star after insisting he wouldn't do another Bourne film without Greengrass at the helm?  Would we be seeing a prequel or even a reboot?

Earlier this week we got a few answers as news broke that Gilroy would also be directing his script for The Bourne Legacy.  But what does that mean for Damon or his titular character?  The answer:  they don't need 'em.  At least not for this film anyway.

'Bourne 4' Back On, But Will Matt Damon Return?

This could be just the thing to light the fire under Matt Damon to return as Jason Bourne. Tony Gilroy, who wrote and directed Michael Clayton and Duplicity but made his mark co-writing the entire Bourne trilogy, has been hired by Universal to write the fourth chapter, which Deadline says will be called The Bourne Legacy.

There's a Bourne Legacy book, commissioned by Robert Ludlum's estate but written by Eric Lustabader, but this won't have anything to do with that. And it won't be a prequel, which was the remedy when Paul Greengrass walked off the project and Matt Damon said he wouldn't make another Bourne without Greengrass.

Paul Greengrass Not Directing 3-D 'Fantastic Voyage'

There's going to be a 3-D Fantastic Voyage remake produced by James Cameron, but it won't be directed by Paul Greengrass. Several weeks ago, it was revealed that Greengrass, on the heels of his only critical and commercial failure working in America, Green Zone, was discussing the project with Cameron.

At the time, I said it was an odd mix, because epic 3-D pictures are not at all where Greengrass is at his best. Just as James Cameron is great as his thing, Greengrass' strength is stunt-fueled action scenes shot with handheld cameras. Whether that was part of the decision or not, Greengrass is off the case, according to Filmonic. But the real news may be that the Bourne director is lining up a Treasure Island remake being produced by Sherlock Holmes writer Lionel Wigram, who is also working on one of two Three Musketeers movies. All of them will be at Warner Bros., which continues to be the pace setter among American film studios.
