'Pineapple Express' Sequel Could Be About the Miami Coke Scene

David Green who directed the 2008 hit comedy, Pineapple Express sat down with MTV at New York Comic Con to catch up the media on stuff he's been working on.  As you know, Pineapple Express was a huge hit, producing about a 300% return for the studio.  

Obviously, this type of success gives David Green the green light on a sequel for the film once he gets his creative juices flowing to figure out how to make another drug comedy without playing the same tune.  It seems like he does have some sort of an idea in terms of the direction he wants to go.

No 'Superbad 2,' But Maybe 'Pineapple Express 2'

"Never, at any juncture in the history of life, have we considered Superbad 2," says Evan Goldberg, co-writer of the original Superbad. It's the same thing Seth Rogen has said for a couple years, although he has added that studio pressure was there to make a sequel.

But Goldberg tells MTV that just flat-out won't happen, holding the door open for another possibility, that the inferior Pineapple Express could get a follow-up. That story, he says, has a more natural extension, and that's true, and he adds that the sequel has kind of been mapped out. But it'll take a while before he, Rogen, and everyone else can come back to it. "We kind of made the classic mistake of people who had a successful film: we then booked everything we could because we thought it'd be our only chance," Goldberg explains. "It still could be our only chance, but man are we booked."

Apatow Talks 'Superbad,' 'Pineapple Express' Sequels

First the good news: There won't be a Superbad sequel. That's according to Judd Apatow, who said in a recent interview, "I can't get them to make a Superbad sequel. I begged, but they don't want to ruin it. They think its a gem of a movie, and they don't want a crappy second one." In this situation, "they" are Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg, the writers, and perhaps stars Jonah Hill and Michael Cera.

And whoever "they" are in total, they're right. I don't know where you take it, exactly, or how you get it to find the kind of novelty that made the first film so successful. It's possible, but it's also probable that a sequel would come up more than a little bit short. Now the bad news, or potentially bad news: Apatow says that Rogen and Golderg may revisit another film for a part two. "There is a little talk about he Pineapple Express sequel. You probably have a better shot of seeing that."

Alternate 'Pineapple Express' Ending

You'll find the following alternate ending on the DVD for Pineapple Express, starring Seth Rogen and Golden Globe nominee James Franco. I'm not saying it's a legitimate deleted scene - because, really, I'm calling bullshit - but at least they did something with the DVD. There's nothing I hate more than when you wait for a DVD because you know the extra features are going to be great, and then when you get it, it's like the French language track, trailers, and a commentary by an associate producer and a guy from the props department. Lame. Speaking of endings, I love the last scene in Pineapple Express at the diner. That's some of the film's funnier stuff, as far as I'm concerned.

Box Office - 'Dark Knight' Second All-Time, Second This Weekend

The 31-day stranglehold on number one is over. The Dark Knight has finally surrendered the top spot at the U.S. box office, but it did not go quietly. In fact, while most every analyst predicted a drop to third place, the Batman sequel stood its ground and only slipped to second place, passing Star Wars on the all-time list of top-grossing movies in the process; it now only trails Titanic.

The new champeen is Tropic Thunder, which did not put up great numbers over its first five days. As a matter of fact, Pineapple Express, last week's number two film, opened more strongly over the same number of days. But the Ben Stiller comedy did outperform the rest of the field each day, so it sits with $37 million so far, according to Box Office Mojo, about five million less than I would have expected. The Dark Knight wound up in second place for two reasons: The new Star Wars movie, The Clone Wars, opened very soft, generating only $15 million, and The Dark Knight only lost 35% of its audience from the previous weekend. That number is significant because it represents the second-smallest drop in the top ten - for the movie that's been in the top then the longest - and that means, of course, that the Batman sequel is getting a lot of return business. The weekend's third new release, Mirrors with Kiefer Sutherland, opened in fourth place, ahead of Pineapple Express, which had a 57% freefall compared to last week.
