DJ Caruso Says He'll Direct 'Preacher'

It's been a while since we've heard anything about Preacher, the movie adaptation of the cult-favorite DC Comics series. Nearly 2 years ago, producer—and at the time, possible director—Sam Mendes said the script, written by John August, was about halfway done. Then we heard that John Cusack was very interested in one of the lead roles, and I thought he seemed like the perfect choice to play the titular character. But we haven't had any news on this project for well over a year now, until today.

DJ Caruso, the director of such mediocre fair as Disturbia, Eagle Eye, and last weekend's I Am Number Four, today tweeted that he's just closed his deal on Preacher, meaning the film now has a director, so we can hope for more news on casting and a production schedule in the near future.

John Cusack Would Love a Part in 'Preacher'

Kind of a strange series of quotes from John Cusack during the 2012 junket. The actor was talking to io9 when the subject of comic book movies came up. Now, normally, it's been my experience that Cusack's not big on talking about his work or the business in general, preferring baseball as a topic of conversation, or just about anything else.

But he was more than willing to talk about comic book movies, his desire to work in one, and that the comic book that has his interest is Preacher, the adaptation being produced (and possibly directed) by Sam Mendes. Oddly, Cusack never brings up Mendes' name, nor does he even know the name of the comic at first, but describes enough of the story that it can be the only story he's talking about. "There was one or two that I heard of that sounded really cool," said Cusack. "One of them was about, I think...it's a vampire and a killer, and they're on the road, and it's this really strange story." Well, that's Preacher, and after he's prompted, Cusack admits that's probably the one he's referring to.

Sam Mendes Updates 'Preacher': Script is Half Done

I wholeheartedly agree with MTV's assessment of the upcoming Sam Mendes comic book adaptation: "With a complicated storyline and some weighty subject matter, it’s tricky to imagine the best way to pull off a live-action Preacher." I don't believe it can be made with pure commercial motives in mind, because you're better off just making some other comic book movie, but I do think there's a lot of hope for it artistically.

Mendes agrees, giving MTV a status report on the script currently being crafted by John August. “He’s doing pretty well. He’s about halfway through. There’s a long way to go yet, but I’m very, very hopeful. I think it could be amazing.” It's a pretty out-there story, if you've never followed it. Think of it as a possessed preacher's walking tour of the country to find God. Literally. His entire congregation is destroyed by this supernatural creature, which winds up taking over Jesse Custer's body and imbuing him with both pure good and pure evil. And then the fun begins...
