Movie Review - 'Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides

Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides Starring Johnny Depp, Penelope Cruz, Ian McShane and Geoffrey Rush Directed by Rob Marshall Rated PG-13

Jack Sparrow (reprised by the one and only Johnny Depp) finds himself once again maneuvering through harried situations, leaping off an alarming amount of cliffs and walks around as if he were stuck on a trip he wasn't particularly interested to begin with. Sure Jack can muster all the one-liners he likes, but the message is clear: We've come to expect the unexpected, regardless if it makes any sense. Thankfully, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides is self-contained in this rather dull installment of searching for the mythical Fountain of Youth and doesn't make a mess by keeping its story simple and straightforward, unlike previous installments.

What's even more alarming is that in the hands of Rob Marshall, On Stranger Tides fails in strange hands. The film plods away with unimaginative direction by Rob Marshall. He tries inserting a quaint scene between Angelica and Jack, as they try to dance sultrily to a non-existent chemistry between the two. The newest addition to the Pirates franchise is Angelica (Penélope Cruz), love-scorned by Jack, she brings him along to the fountain of youth because she does (or still doesn't) love Jack. No matter how hard the film tries convincing us that Angelica and Jack have this undeniable chemistry, they fall into this routine oddly resembling an old bickering couple.

Can Pirates of the Caribbean sustain its summer competition?

The rapidly approaching May 20th, 2011 release date for Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides has sent Walt Disney out on a promotional spree. Recently released by Walt Disney Pictures showcases many of the franchise iconic leads in Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) and Barbosa (Georffrey Rush) but, we get to see some newbies with Blackbeard (Ian McShane) and Angelica (Penelope Cruz). Johnny Depp wants Rob Marshall to direct 'The Thin Man' Reboot

Johnny Depp seems to be Hollywood's busiest actor, showing interest in developing several projects at once.  According to Vulture, Depp's newest dream project is an adaption of Dashiell Hammett's mystery novel 'The Thin Man'.  Depp also wants director Rob Marshall, who is currently directing Depp as Jack Sparrow in 'Pirates of the Carribean: On Stranger Tides' to join him.

Hammett's novel has already inspired six films, which started in 1934 with 'The Thin Man' starring William Powell and Myrna Loy, and concluded with the final film in 1947, 'Song of the Thin Man'.  It should be noted that Hammett only wrote the one novel, which spawned six films after.

'Pirates 4' Wraps Production in Hawaii

That seemed faster than it was: Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides has wrapped its production in the Aloha State, according to Hawaii Magazine. What began on June 14th on the coast of Kauai wrapped less than two months later.

However, ther might still be a couple things left to shoot in Southern California, and producer Jerry Bruckheimer said earlier this summer that the slimmed-down Pirates 4 would shoot for 90 - 95 days total, down by nearly two months from At World's End. So there's still time within that schedule to find more things to put in front of Rob Marshall's 3-D cameras.

Depp Carries a Torch for Cruz in 'Pirates 4'

Here's a shock: Penélope Cruz will play Johnny Depp's love interest in Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides. Much like Clarissa in days of yore, Jerry Bruckheimer explains it all.

"She plays the daughter of Blackbeard," The Bruck told MTV at ShoWest. "She's the daughter of the bad guy." Blackbeard is reportedly being portrayed by Ian McShane meaning...uh...meaning I think those genetics are flat impossible. Seriously, how hot must the baby mama be if Penélope is the result of anything and Ian McShane?
