GTBP.net 'SALT' Prize Pack Giveaway

As you guys may know, SALT starring Angelina Jolie came out of Blu-ray and DVD right before Christmas.  But if you haven't Netflixed it or bought the DVD, here's a chance to win one from yours truly.  In my opinion, SALT is just a fun, solid movie and I'm not just saying this because of the giveaway, in fact we've turned away giveaway offers of poor movies. 'Salt' Sequel Looking Like a Strong Possibility

A few weeks ago, we thought it was a given that Salt would get a sequel. It had a big opening weekend, stars one of the most recognizable people in the world, is wide open for follow-ups, and a Salt II has already been discussed.

However, The Los Angeles Times says Sony wants to get a better sense of the international box office before it commits to a franchise. So far, Salt has made a little north of $160 million, $100 million of which is US money. This is the same studio that saw 2012 open with almost $150 million outside the US. There is work left to be done, in other words.

Box Office - 'Schmucks' Fades, 'Inception' Wins Again

Dinner for Schmucks couldn't keep the heat on Inception over the course of three days, and wound up finishing the weekend in second place. We thought that would probably happen; the lead after Friday was neglible and given the advantage Inception had in the number of theaters and its terrific holds in the first two weeks, it just looked like it was headed to a third straight win.

That is, in fact, what has happened. Inception earned enough on Saturday and Sunday to pull ahead of Schmucks for its third victory, and a very healthy $190 million-plus after just over two weeks in theaters. We mentioned yesterday that the end of the road is north of $250 million for this one, but I won't predict a $300 million total at this point. It'll be close, though. Probably about $225 after next weekend, so there's a slim chance that could happen. As for Schmucks, it didn't get enough of a push after Friday to knock over the Christopher Nolan-Leonardo DiCaprio effort. For that, we'll need to wait for Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg in The Other Guys next weekend. That ought to do about the same business, maybe better, but Inception will drop to below $20 million, so it's an easier road.

Box Office - 'Schmucks' Edges 'Inception' on Friday

The comedy Dinner for Schmucks got a quick start at the box office on Friday, bringing in $8.4 million, which was just enough to beat Inception. However, because it is such a close race after one day, and because Inception has about 600 more screens (or about 20% more), I wouldn't expect that to hold all weekend.

Inception checked in with $8.1 million, bringing the 15-day total to just under $175 million in the US, and by the end of the weekend, we'll be very close to $200 million here and roughly half that amount overseas. That puts it very close to real profitability, which was not assured given the circumstances. Hopefully, now that it will make some good money, more studios will follow Warner Bros.' lead and get more daring in the summer season.

Fearless Forecast: One More Win for 'Inception'

It will be another competitive weekend at the box office, this time with maybe $10 million separating the top three films. Inception looks to hold on to the top spot again, Salt hopes to not fall completely off the planet, and Dinner for Schmucks may play spoiler, but probably not.

First: Inception. Christopher Nolan's dreamscape has been making good money in its second week, averaging about $5.7 million a day since Monday. That's good for a movie after its second weekend, particularly one that's not drenched in universal appeal. It has now officially made money by the budget/box office standard, but the more sophisticated accounting points to a while before it's really in the black. International business is healthy, and Inception will be closing in on $200 million in the US by the end of the weekend (probably Tuesday or Wednesday for that magic number, though).
