Robert Rodriguez to Direct Sin City 2

Mr. Rodriguez heaps more on to his plate with the recent announcement that he will be directing the long awaited Sin City 2 after the completion of Spy Kids 4.

The news was revealed in a Facebook livechat yesterday afternoon where Rodriguez said, "Frank Miller and I are working on it. It's slated to be the next one, but if the script is not ready, then we'll have to move to the next one." The script has apparently been done since 2007. It was Rodriguez that thought it still needed more work.

Rodriguez on 'Predators,' 'Sin City,' 'Spy Kids' Sequels

"There are so many great ideas," Robert Rodriguez told MovieWeb about a sequel to next weekend's Predators. "Just following Laurence Fishburne's character (Noland) around in a prequel would be a great movie. Just the tales he tells in this movie alone, I want to see those experiences."

The subject of follow-ups means a pretty lengthy conversation with Rodriguez, because he always seems to be developing these franchises even if you don't necessarily think of him as a guy who does a lot of series. But Predators is just one of several sequel possibilities Rodriguez has cooking, not that they'll necessarily happen.

"Once you come up with the idea of a Predator Planet, that Predators use as their hunting grounds and humans are involved somehow, the story ideas that you can come up with are so numerous that you can come up with any approach. So we already have several ideas that we can go with for a sequel. They would all be good ideas but we would probably put them together to see which one rises to the top, if we made another one."

Another "We'll Shoot 'Sin City 2' Next Year" Story

Once again, I'll believe it when I see it, but there's more talk that Sin City 2 will film this year. But there are a couple new wrinkles this time. Mania reports that producer Stephen L'Heureux outlines a production start sometime in the second half of 2010, but it won't be based on any of Frank Miller's comics.

Instead, the script will be completely original, and Milller will again co-direct with Robert Rodriguez. That's not a surprise. But why the new script? Hadn't Miller already spent years developing the sequel using his graphic novel series as inspiration? If not, that helps explain part of the delay. Miller has since moved on to working on a screenplay for his Dark Horse comic Hard Boiled, according to L'Heureux.

Gerard Butler and Frank Miller Have Talked 'Sin City'

Gerard Butler hasn't completely closed the door on another 300 movie - although he says he's not sure it would ever happen - but he and Frank Miller might be reconnecting on something else in the future. Butler told MTV's Splashpage that he and the 300 and Sin City author have discussed another possible sequel.

"At one point, he talked to me about one of the Sin City [movies]," Butler confirmed. "There's a kind of cool character I think in the third one. But it was all very kind of soft talk." Of course, if it will take the second movie in the series over six year to follow up the original, that puts Sin City 3 on a collision course with 2017. Actually, though I haven't heard anything about this, I would presume the two sequels would likely be shot back-to-back, if they happen at all. Seems like the easiest way to go about it rather than trying to get all the pieces back in place again down the road.

Now It's Clive Owen's Turn to Promise 'Sin City 2'

Stop me if you've heard this one before: The sequel to Sin City will go into production next year. Of course, I heard Frank Miller and Rosario Dawson say this in 2008, I think I heard Robert Rodriguez say it in 2007, I know Angelina Jolie was reportedly cast in the sequel that year, and I'm fairly sure Dawson also said something about it in 2006.

The point is, Sin City 2 is a fairly tired line, but people keep chucking it out there. Clive Owen told MTV, "I'm hearing it might be next year," and added that "a very good source" confirmed the news. Would that good source be one of the directors, both of whom have said "next year" in previous years? "Maybe one of them," Owen replied.
