Spike Lee's 'Oldboy' to Somehow Have "Darker" Ending

Fans of the original Korean revenge film are probably just as perplexed as I am at that statement, as it's hard to imagine being possible.  But, according to producer Roy Lee, that's what we might have to look forward to. In addition to confirmation that Colin Firth is going to play the villain (as we previously reported the possibility of), we got some other details about how Spike Lee's version of Oldboy will differ from the original.

Spike Lee wants Colin Firth as Villain in 'Oldboy' Adaptation

After failing to break through development hell when it was slated to be directed by Steven Spielberg and star Will Smith, it seems as though an American remake of the Korean revenge flick Oldboy is coming along nicely.  So far, Spike Lee is set to direct with Josh Brolin in the starring role, and we might just get to see him swearing revenge against last year's Best Actor Oscar winner Colin Firth, according to Twitch.

Josh Brolin to Headline Spike Lee's 'Oldboy' Reboot?

Josh Brolin's rumored involvement in Spike Lee's remake of the Korean film Oldboy (2003) is a reality today, as Deadline reports the star has officially landed the lead.  The original version, now considered a cult classic, was directed by Chan-wook Park.  The film starred Min-sik Choi as a man kidnapped and imprisoned for 15 years without an explanation, who's released and only has five days to find those responsible (the same role Brolin will now fill in Lee's updated Oldboy).

'Oldboy' Remake is NOT Dead and it's going to be a Spike Lee Joint?

3 years ago we heard that Will Smith was attempting to set up a remake of Park Chan-Wook's revenge thriller Oldboy and Steven Spielberg might produce or even direct it. Fortunately or unfortunately rights issues supposedly complicated the situation so much (meaning it would've cost too much for the rights) that DreamWorks decided to walk away and that seem to be the last fried dumpling (straw) for the remake. Wait there's more... now this week it appears that the U.S. remake is still moving forward, and a big name director is circling it. Would you believe that big name director is Spike Lee?

Spike Lee Sets a 'Nagasaki Deadline'

Just when it looked like Spike Lee might enjoy a lengthy career revival after Inside Man made a lot of moneyand was his best movie in years, he went and made Miracle at St. Anna, a languid piece of historical fiction that was somehow short on action and narrative heft even though it's nearly three damn hours long.

Nobody went to see it and that may have put the brakes on Lee's comeback, especially with the recent cancellation of Inside Man sequel. So what is Spike's new defibrillator? No, not campaigning for LeBron James to join the Knicks, although he's doing a fair amount of that. Cinema Blend says Lee will direct a terrorism-themed thriller called Nagasaki Deadline, which has roots dating back nearly a decade. The film has finally found its footing thanks to Lightstorm, Alcon, and 8:38, and because James Cameron funnels his stuff through Lightstorm, there was a belief on Monday that he'd be producing this, but that's not true. Instead, Jon Landau, Cameron's constant co-producer, Jon Landau is taking the lead along with Rae Sanchini for Lightstorm.
