J.J. Abrams Discusses 'Star Trek 2'

Thanks to the TCA (Television Critics Association) having a panel on the latest television series Alcatraz, J.J. Abrams (who produces the show) spoke a little about the much anticipated sequel Stark Trek 2 which begins production this week.  Abrams also spoke briefly on post-converting the film to 3D.

J.J. Abrams Says 'Star Trek' Sequel To Be Shot in 2D, Possibly IMAX

To 3D or Not to 3D

Looks like the sequel to the 2009 Star Trek reboot will go the 2D to post-conversion 3D route, according to director J.J. Abrams.  What this means is, like many films before it Star Trek 2 will be shot in 2D and converted to 3D after.  But that's not all, some of the film may be shot in an IMAX format as well, similar to Mission: Impossible-Ghost Protocol and The Dark Knight Rises.

Abrams confirmed all of this when asked about it by MTV.

Edgar Ramirez Next Up for 'Star Trek 2' Villain Role?

J.J. Abrams apparently has his sights set on a new main villain for the Star Trek sequel now that Beniciio Del Toro snubbed the project for a bigger paycheck.  Variety reported earlier today that actor Edgar Ramirez from the popular mini-series Carlos is now the front-runner to land the lead baddie role in the Untitled Star Trek sequel.  If Ramirez is hired, he'll join fellow newcomers Alice Eve and Peter Weller (Robocop) as the new faces in a cast largely comprised of returning actors from the first film.

Benicio Del Toro Backs Out of 'Star Trek 2'

It had been reported over the past week or so that Benicio Del Toro was in negotiations to appear as the unnamed villain in the sequel to 2009's Star Trek prequel/reboot.  Rumors began to surface that he was cast as legendary villain and internet meme Khan, but they were seemingly shot down by J.J. Abrams.  Later leaked reports insisted that Khan still was the villain, suggesting that Abrams was just lying to surprise the fans. Whether Khan is the villain or not, however, we now know that Del Toro won't be playing him.

J.J. Abrams Dismisses Khan in 'Star Trek' Sequel Rumors

Khaaaan!?

Maybe Benicio Del Toro shows up in the sequel to the Star Trek reboot, but not as Khan.  Don't believe me?  Hitflix spoke to director J.J. Abrams to check the validity on the Wrath of Khan rumor, and Abrams simply said, "not true."  So, we'll have to wait and see who the next Captain Kirk hater will be, though it's still possible Benicio signs up for the gig.  No official negotiations have begun yet, to my knowledge.
