George Clooney and Sony to Make a Smothers Brothers Biopic

 

George Clooney (The Descendants) and his Smokehouse Pictures are teaming up with Sony to tell the behind-the-scenes story of one of America’s most famous television shows.  According to Deadline, Clooney and his producing partner, Grant Heslov had already optioned the rights to, Dangerously Funny: The Uncensored Story Of The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour, before seeking a deal with Sony.  Brian Hecker and Craig Sherman have been hired to write the adapted screenplay from the book was written by television critic, David Bianculli.

'The Big Year' Poster and Trailer

Birdwatching sounds like the single most boring activity to do.  I love birds, in fact my nickname is named after one, but going out to watch birds seems boring.  It could probably be compared to the down time between catching fish on a fishing trip. Now competitive birdwatching might be a tad more exciting if Jack Black, Steve Martin, and Owen Wilson are your competition. 'The Big Year' A Movie About Birdwatching?

I have been out of the loop for a few weeks now and during this hiatus from recreational technology the question of Steve Martin came up in conversation, so naturally, upon returning I looked him up, and viola, The Big Year.  Martin stars alongside comedy veterans Jack Black and Owen Wilson in a comedy revolving around the world of birdwatching.  How is that even remotely funny one might ask?

Producers Considering Another Oscar Host?

I wonder if this is true or if it's just a contingency plan. Deadline Hollywood reports that producers of the Academy Awards might supplement the show's two hosts, Alec Baldwin and Steve Martin, by adding a third performer. Nikki Finke wonders, "How much you wanna bet it's someone younger and/or female and/or ethnically/racially diverse?"

I'd says got the first two right. If they're looking at anyone other than Tina Fey, then I'll be floored. It has nothing to do with me liking Fey or anything, just that she has worked with Martin before and, of course, she's completely comfortable with Baldwin. She can also write her own material (or material for her co-hosts) and might actually be a reason to tune in.

Trailer - Streep, Martin, Baldwin in 'It's Complicated'

I don't have a lot of tolerance for Nancy Meyers movies. As a director, she's one for four, with Something's Gotta Give getting by because of its good cast. Maybe another solid collection of talent can help steer her latest, It's Complicated, in the right direction. I'm not holding out hope, though.

I mean, it can't possibly be as lame as The Holiday...or can it? Well, the central story is redeemable, at least: Divorcee Meryl Streep is having an affair with Alec Baldwin, who is her ex-husband. Of course, their kids can't know, and she's trying to hide it from Steve Martin, an architect with a thing for Streep, and who I presume is building a post-divorce home for her. I'm not saying I'd rearrange my schedule to see it, but if I were a 50-year-old woman, I think I'd probably choose this over, say, Avatar. So in that respect, Meyers is catering to her audience. But, man, am I glad I'm not part of that audience.
