'The Crow' Reboot Back in the Works

Why are the useless projects the ones that always seem to make it out of development hell?  We've reported previously on the Crow reboot and how awful it looked when Bradley Cooper was attached to it, but soon afterwards legal disputes rose between the two studios collaberating on the project. 

The Weinstein Company and Relativity Media sued each other over distribution rights, and for a while it seemed like the project was mercifully dead in the water.  Now, the companies have put their conflicts aside, and now it's back in the production.

'The Crow' Remake No Longer Happening?

Not too long ago we reported that there was a remake of The Crow in the works. It was set to star Mark Wahlberg, with Stephen Norrington directing and Nick Cave writing the script. But those opposed to such a thing (myself included) can breathe a bit easier; it seems that may have all been just talk.

Mark Wahlberg Offered 'The Crow' Reboot

First, this must be said: for fans of James O'Barr's classic comic series, Brandon Lee will always be The Crow.  The late actor managed to encapsulate everything that made the gothic character great up until the tragic set accident that took his life.  After all the god awful sequels and recastings of the lead that followed, it was only a matter of time until Hollywood remade Alex Proyas' 1994 adaptation.

Well plans for the Stephen Norrington/Relativity Media remake are finally moving forward and an offer went out today for an actor to play the titular character.  An actor I typically like but couldn't be more wrong for this role: Mark Wahlberg.

'The Crow' Reboot Filming By End of This Year

They're still going through with that reboot of The Crow; feel free to drop your thoughts on that in the comments section. Stephen Norrington, who's been guiding it for a couple years through development, won't keep us waiting too much longer.

Producer Edward Pressman, tells MTV the plan is star the reboot very soon. "[We've got an offer out] to a major actor and things are moving ahead very aggressively, with the aim of doing the film this year," Pressman said. "The setting is the southwest — the Mexico/Arizona area — and an urban [setting], Detroit or Pittsburgh or something like that," added the producer, who calls the script "fantastic," as if he'd say "it's atrocious."

Director Says 'Crow' Remake May Shoot This Summer

The remake or rebirth or regeneration or rebootmagining of The Crow might finally shoot this summer, so says director Stephen Norrington. He tells Mania (via Worst Previews), "The producer and visual effects people are crunching numbers...we've opened discussions with major cast but nothing is final yet."

The "crunching numbers" part of that should tell you all you really need to know, specifically that there's no budget in place yet, and until that happens, the film can't really move forward. You can't hire actors, can't approve a crew or even locations, so I'd say summer is fairly optimistic. But it only takes one "yes" from the right person. And even though Norrington hopes it happens this summer, he does acknowledge that all those things take time and, more importantly, money, so he clarifies that it's far from being a done deal.
